Im in the Process of getting one done now and it will cost with crown around $1,500 but mine is a molar and it costs more and its in MN, as for time its about an hour and a half from what my dentist said, my insurance covers 80% of it but only 50% of the crown. As for your tooth falling out it shouldnt, the nerves are not holding it in, the nerves help the tooth grow once it stops growing they are no longer needed, the only purpose they then serve is a hot and cold signal without the nerv you wont get that. As for pain i hear it hurts so far i have had all the pulp taken out of my tooth and at the end of the month they will take the rest of the nervs, I will tell you this though im in 125% less pain now then i was with the pulp dying inside my tooth. If you need a root canal get it done the other option is pulling the tooth.

Ya know, I've heard a lot of "root canals are so painful" comments, and when I had people clarify, what's painful is usually whatever made you need it. Before any type of process like that you'll have a pain numbing agent. I won't lie though, root canals are BORING! I never had a TV so it was sitting there for an hour and a half just doing nothing. Past that, no pain during, no pain or even soreness after, nothing. The crown will absolutely fix the problem. I mean it won't make a new perfect tooth magically grow in, but it'll stop any further problems or any pain you may be having. Best wishes.

First of all, don't freak out. It sounds like you may need a root canal on the tooth that's bothering you. I've had 2 of them done and while I'll admit they're not a whole lot of fun, they aren't that bad. They take about an hour or so depending on how bad the tooth is infected. They numb you up pretty good before starting so you shouldn't feel anything, if you're more comfortable with it, ask the dentist to give you the gas, it makes you much more comfortable while they're working. It is pretty uncomfortable for a while, but it will go away. And then after everything heals up, the tooth won't hurt anymore. You won't be able to feel hot or cold with that tooth, but you really never notice. On one of mine afterward they put a silver cap on it, on the other they rebuilt the tooth altogether. I had them done many years ago and neither one has fallen out or given me anymore trouble. So trust me, it's worth the pain to get it taken care of because once it's done it's done. It's best if you can find a specialist rather than an ordinary dentist, but either way they will take good care of you. I hope everything works out and you feel better, I know how much a tooth ache can suck.

OK, first, take 3 deep breaths to calm down--yeah, it works.
You'll only get a root canal if there's an infection at the tip of the root of that tooth (or the one next to it--the dentist will check out both, because sometimes you just can't tell by yourself).
Now, the infection that shows up at the tip, started in the crown of the tooth (what you see above the gum), and has already destroyed the pulp, blood vessels and nerve in the tooth. The tooth is dead, contained in its enamel shell.
The root canal itself is painless--the nerve is dead! No nerve, no pain. What you're feeling is from surrounding nerves, and pressure. For some reason no one knows, pressure nerves can't be anesthesized!
Now, what the dentist does is open up the top of the tooth to give himself room to work, and removes all the dead gunk and infection. To get to the tip of the root, he uses itty-bitty files that he wriggles with his fingers only--the files are that small! This part may take an hour and a half to two hours.
Then, the dentist will put in a temporary, medicated filling to kill any remaining infection.
A week later, you'll be back to get the temp filling out, and the dentist will smell it to see if he can smell pus from the infection. If there's still an infection, you'll get another temporary medicated filling. If it's all cleaned up, you'll get a permanent filling, with reinforcements down the root canal--they look like little rolled up paper toothpicks.
Usually, but not necessarily always, you'll need an artificial crown to cover the top of the tooth where the dentist made room to work. These are usually glued on (the dentist will call it cement).
Dental insurance usually covers part, but not all of the cost.
Unlike what the comedians say, *I* really would rather have a root canal--it's my favorite procedure, and despite being Mr. Chicken otherwise, I always ask for a mirror so I can watch!

I am only 15 and i have had severe tooth decay in my upper right molar from a cavity requiring a root canal. I get it in about a week and am not that worried as pain is only temporary and can only get better from what it was. It started as a cavity about a year ago and was not bad until ~2 months after it formed it started to hurt and developed a sharp lil point on the side of my tooth id always play with with my tongue. About 5 months ago a large hole developed on the bottom of my tooth and it began to hurt when i would bite down on it. From about a week after i noitced the hole it hurt 24/7 excruiciating pain that would keep me up at night and if i bit down a sharp as **** pain would go up the side of my face into my right side of my brain and hurt for minutes of unbearable pain. The constant pain went away after about 2 months and i finally got an appointment to my dentist. They scheduled me for a root canal 1 and half months later ( in one week from now ) and i am looking forward to it, yet also kind of scared/dont know what to expect. I cant bite down on the right side of my mouth at all still as it still hurts. The whole in my tooth is rather large and i clean it out with a tooth pick as it gets food stuck in it. Often a very foul taste will come out of the tooth if i swish saliva / a liquid into the whole. The pain doesnt bother me anymore and i often 'fiddle' with it with my tongue just out of boredom and it hurts still but its just become a habit and ive gotten used to the pain. I think this whole incident has increased my pain tolerance 10X as one day i stepped on a needle and it went into my foot about an inch and dint even bother me i just pulled it out.
I too also live in michigan and they said the co-pay ( the part my parents have to pay (insurance covers rest)) is only 185$ but i dont think that includes the crown which i think is about 600$ for a gold one which insurance covers about 80% i think.
Good luck with the rootcanal if you end up getting it. If you email me i will contact you after my procedure and let you know how it went. Teh.hacker@gmail.com --

LILI,
YOU NEED TO GET YOUR ANSWERS FROM A DENTIST NOT JUST LAYPEOPLE W/O REAL FACTS.
REGARDING YOUR FRONT TOOTH, IT SOMETIMES IS SENSITIVE TO COLD. THIS NORMALLY TAKES SOME TIME TO IMPROVE.
YOU MAY NEED A ROOT CANAL EVENTUALLY DEPENDING ON THE AMOUNT OF DECAY REMOVED ORIGINALLY, BUT IT'S TOO SOON TO TELL IF YOU IN FACT NEED ONE NOW.
A ROOT CANAL FOR A FRONT TOOTH DOES NOT TAKE 5 HOURS, BUT ABOUT 45-65 MINUTES.
THIS TOOTH WILL NOT FALL OUT, SO YOUR FEAR OF GETTING A FAKE TOOTH NEEDS NOT TO HAPPEN.
KEEP A WATCH ON THIS TOOTH, AND IF IT'S STILL HAVING THE SAME SYMPTOMS AFTER ABOUT 2-3 MONTHS, SEE THE DENTIST.
