I've been invited to a First Communion and I'm not sure what it entails. Should I buy a present, and if so, what's appropriate? (for a boy)

First Communion is when a Catholic child receives Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time at Mass. It is a very special occasion and so I would dress very nicely and bringing a gift is optional.

If you do get a gift, it should be religious in nature - a child's bible, a rosary, etc.

Not sure if you've been to Mass before, but only Catholics will receive communion there, as they believe Jesus Christ is present, body and blood soul and divinity, in Communion.

God bless.

A first communion is the first time a child receives what catholics believe to be The Body and Blood of Jesus Christ. This is a huge sacrament in the church and it's big. Most people will probably bring gifts, but I don't think the first communion should be about getting presents. Anyways, if you do get them something it should be either money or a religious object, maybe even there own bible.

A Catholic first communion is the ceremony marking when a child is responsible for his or her own sins. Before that time, which the church calls "the age of reason" (HA! They haven't visited Saturday morning television lately!), a child is not held responsible for their own sins.

They dress all in white, and they take communion (the bread and sometimes wine of ritual) all in a row before the altar, and it's very solemn and quite beautiful.

A present is appropriate, and it should be something relevant to his spiritual development. A nice rosary, a missal (prayer book) or a statue of his name-saint would be traditional. It is appropriate to ask his parents what they would suggest. Cash is always approved, but a gift card to a bookstore or some other wholesome retail outlet would be good, as well.

First communion is well explained below. Children generally have competitions to see who gets the most cash so a child always appreciates money. Twenty is the most suitable amount placed in a Communion card. If you know the boy well a gift of something you know they want is perfectly acceptable.

a child's first communion is where they are allowed to receive holy communion in church for the first time, most gift shops sell first communion gifts such as rosary beads, small crucifix necklaces, a children's bible or communion book and loads more with nice cards as well

A card, or a Rosary, or a prayer book. You could also go with a Crucifix, or a picture of Jesus.

If you are not Catholic, and want to show support, a card and note are fine.

Peace!
