I have been told by many people that Cuba has the best healthcare in the world. I'm curious do they mean the actual system (i.e. treatment of people efficiently and successfully) or, that they have excellent doctors, facillities and equipment or is there any truth to it at all!

Cuba has the highest ratio of doctors per head of population of any country (W.H.O) at one per 177 people. Cuba is one of the biggest contributors to UN disaster relief programmes (eg.Tsunami 2004, Kashmir Earthquake 2005). It's domestic services are comprehensive & free though lacking many superficial Western "health" treatments.

Apparently so.

I watched a programme on it once...BBC Newsnight I think.

From what I vaguely remember, you do not get to go to hospital unless you are referred...they have small localised offices, where perhaps a trainee doctor will be, and you go there instead of going to hospital to get a diagnosis...then he can refer you or patch you up. Apparently saves them an absolute boat load of cash as expensive doctors do not deal with piffling cases and it is an extremely efficient system.

Of course, if your leg is hanging off then I am sure they will allow you to go straight to hospital!

They have one of the lowest, if not the lowest infant mortality rates in the world and their medical professionals are respected the world over too.

We could learn a lot!

What Cuba has is an amazingly portion of the population with advanced nursing degress and doctors. Most of it's equipment is circa 1976. Same with meds. There is at least one group of physicians that I know of who smuggle in HIV meds, for example.

Cuba has state of the art healthcare, for those chosen few that can either pay for it, or are friends of the Castro boys. A vast majority of cubans, never see the inside of a doctor's office.

False. The British National Health Service is the best.
