I live in New England where it doesn't normally get that hot, but this year it's already in the 90's and its only May. I need to keep the rooms upstairs cool without use of an air conditioner. Every room has a fan and we have coverered up all the windows with dark fabric to try to keep the cool air in. But its still HOT. Any ideas?

I'm in Ct so i know exactly what your talking about. I've had luck with those double fans that sit in window. I usually have one on intake and the other on exhaust. I think if you keep the rooms shut up your just keeping the air trapped. If you get the double fans at least your getting a constant circulation of air.

I live in Pittsburgh and my room gets extremely hot so I know how you feel the only way is with the air conditioner. Fans do nothing and covering the windows barely helps at all. I just put mine in last night and it is already really cool up there. Hope everything works out for you!

How is the downstairs? If it is cool enough down there, try putting a box fan in an upstairs window on exhaust and keeping any other windows closed. That will pull up the cooler air from downstairs. You could also try a de-humidifier.

Don't cover the windows. Try getting fans that go right in the windows, and blow the hot air right out the window. Keeping good air circulation is the key.

The dark fabric is attracting the sun and its heat, use fans and light colors. Keep the windows open on breezy days. Keep the doors open to vent the air. if all else fails, the ac will have to be turned on

When we lived in New Jersey we had a ceiling fan and that helped. Nothing is really going to keep in cool except an air conditioner. Sorry

I would keep the windows open and then have one fan with air coming in and one far with air going out so it creates a breeze.
I don't think the dark fabric would help, I think it might make it warmer as it absorbs the heat.

open the windows and put a fan facing outward this will allow for air circulation and it draws out all the hot air in your home it be best if you did this on windows not facing the sun you should also do the same for down stairs for better air circulation

i would suggest closing the curtains even during the day and opening the windows to bring air into the room at night. Also keep any doors wide open all the time too.

heat travels upwards and needs to escape so a vent in the ceiling will allow warm air to rise up into the loft depending on your house type..i have a velux roof light fitted in my bedroom which is a god send but i,m in England where it usually is not so hot as with you...having your windows slightly ajar throughout the house will create a nice breeze if there is the slightest wind
