Very few wars have ever started BECAUSE of Religion, but there are many started in the name of Religion.
The difference is evil men use anything they can to justify killing.
Peace!

You need to look deeper into the history of these wars, for example why were Americans wanting independence? Religion is either at the root of the war or the tool used to rally the people emotionally to support the war.

I doubt if religion was the sole cause of very many wars. Religion makes a good excuse especially if you can pay off the local priest to support the idea. Its a way of getting people to fight without having to tell them they may die so you can profit. There was allot of profit made in the crusades and if someone actually believes the Spanish looted the Aztecs to save their souls then they are simply to naive to function.
Most of the time religion was used to justify theft or expansion because people who profit from wars rarely have to fight in them and the ones who fight need some kind of reason.

It can be said that it is a result of poor diplomatic skills.
The cold war was about bringing an end to communism, motive profit from a global market at the expense of cultural representation.
Iraq, the west's dependance on the east's oil supply?, there was a few redundancies at Britains oil depot before the war started and America's economy would be severly affected. Do you think America would pay the rate their dollar depends upon it?.
War is a lack of respect to diversity and who the power of diversity belongs to!.

Religion do not cause wars. But in most cases the leaders who wage wars needs the support of the masses (& voters in some cases) to avoid the obvious political fallout that will occur from the economic & social decline that war usually cause.
It is the masses' children who go 2 war & die. And it is the masses who suffers from the increase cost of food & goods.
Now, as religion is a form of control of the the masses, the leaders will justify they going to war as "being supported by God", so as to get the people's approval.
God is used in this way by every leader who goes to war, but it isnt that religion cause the war, it is just that religion is part of the propaganda associated with war.
Right now in the war against Iraq every act of mass killing is done in the name of God or Allah.
Bush says "We will win & bring democracy in Iraq in the name of God!"
Al Queda says " We will drive the invaders from our land, Allah's name be praised!"
It is all just for the benefit of the media & the people.

Another factor to consider is that many wars ostensibly started for religious reasons were also politically motivated as well. So while religion may have played a large part in them, they might have been waged even without it.

I don't think wars are always caused by religion I think they are caused by self-centered people who are angry because they are not getting their own way and they become vengeful.
