how do you mix new with the antiques to make it look ok
dont want it to look like i live back in years ago but yet want to mix help

If you like it, then it goes! There aren't any set rules, so just go for it! Try things different ways til you like how the room looks then you're done! Look at magazines for ideas.

Mixing new with old is great! Say you are mixing some antique furniture of different types of wood. Use some of the same lamps, ornaments, candles on both to tie them together a bit.
If you are using upholstered items, try to match any colors in common with a wall or floor color. ex: maroon plush chair, print sofa, blue cushion rocker. Paint wall or walls blue, add maroon drapes, toss a blue or maroon throw or afghan over sofa. Or get a rug with the blue and maroon in it.
If you want to emphasize the different furniture, add simple [plain] frames for artwork, i.e., no carved or ornate with colonial styles.
Try to throw in some art/craft work from the period of the different types of furniture. Samplers for colonial, lavalamps for the 70s, afghans for the 50s.

me and my husband just got a new sectional sofa and I have an old wing back chair I reupholstered it in some antique fabric that has some of the same color I have an old pot belled stove in my living room I put a fake stove pipe and leave the doors open have an old peace of wood that my hubby burned with a torch and got some little clip lights with flicker bulbs in them looks like it is on fire it is really cool are tables are new but I have antiques setting on them we like the mix of old and new just play with it you will find the right mix my husband was mad when I brought the stove home but he really likes it now he thought it would look like his great grand parents house he liked it so much be bought on old wood and coal cock stove for the kitchen and now we have two stoves one is just for looks but it is cool with old tea pots and iron skillets on it and I have new pottery and dishes in with it it is really cool
