Stop suspecting, and find out if it is happening. If it is, stop it immediately. Threaten to take away visitation rights. It's wrong, although I don't think it's the cause of his problems

As the childs mother it is your god given right to protect your child. if you even so much as SUSPECT that his father is smoking cannabis (or any drug for that matter)around him then you should speak to your solicitor.
There may be other issues happening at his fathers house which are giving your son nightmares, i would perhaps suggest supervised contact or cut overnight contact altogether, stating that your son is becoming increasingly distressed and you want to find the source of the problem.
It would be best if he was staying with you full time for a while untill he seems more stable.
If the nightmares persist after these steps are taken, you can rule out his father as a cause, and perhaps take him to see your pediatrician who will be able to help.

some medical studies below:
Manno, et al. (1970) calculated that about 50% of the THC contained in a marihuana cigarette would be delivered to the smoker's lungs for absorption if the entire cigarette were smoked in 10 minutes and each inhalation was retained for 30 seconds with no sidestream loss.
Truitt (1971) and co-workers (Foltz et al., 1971) found that 50%c of THC was pyrolyzed and 6% was lost in the side stream while noting that almost 21% of the THC remained in the butt when three-fourths of the cigarette is consumed.

Hallucinations are never a side effect of weed ~ but in children the effects could be very different. Briefly described, it sounds that your child might be having some psychological defenses to something maybe even more traumatic. Are you sure there is no abuse of some sort going on? I think you should talk to a lawyer and find out your rights in making the visits supervised or stop altogether, if it's negatively effecting your child.

Hallucinations and nightmares are not necessarily a side affect of a contact high from marijuana. Especially hallucinations. If you suspect this, you should take your son for urinalysis stating why so that he can be given a tox screening as soon as possible.
Post Script:
You should take your son to a doctor just to be on the safe side. Don't lat a third party be the one to initiate it. That would be bad news for both you and the child's father.

Well, that is just silly to blame on someone smoking pot around him. Cannabis has very little side effects other than a buzz from short term use. Even less than that if it is a contact buzz. If you son is having hallucinations, I am certain it is not from pot. In fact, if he is, I would go to the doctor right now because he is probably majorly screwed up. But not from the pot.

If you think that there is the slightest chance that your son may be ingesting any kind of pyschoactive chemical then remove him from the situation where this may or may not be happening. I know that cannabis use can lead and provoke dormant pyschosis and schizophrenia in people. I do not kbow how it would affect very young children.

Smell the boys clothes, hair, and breath. If you want to be sure, take him to a police station and ask.
If the father is smoking marijuana around him, you could have him arrested.
It affects memory, and will lead to worse performance in school. Unless you want him to be a dufus with the munchies. You can do better by him.

Well you know it's like second hand smoking. He'll get a lot of the effects of cannabis that his Dad is having just on a smaller scale - it doesn't mean he's not at risk from heart disease etc when he's older though. I think you need to do something about it if he's suffering these side effects.
Good luck!

Well, it sounds like halucinations and nightmares to start with... Take him to court. Your son's well-being is your responsibility, and you need to protect him. Hallucinations and nightmares must be very scary for a child. Tell the judge what is going on so your son doesn't have to deal with this anymore. Even if it isn't the pot causing these things, it sounds like it does have something to do with being in a poor environment, so protect him as well as you can. Children cannot protect themselves, it's our responsibility as parents to do it for them.

the munchies
poor short term memory (while unde the influence)
paranoia (which is what you are describing)
It is important to remember that Cannabis is consider a halluecinogen and while I do not think it should be illegal, it should be restricted and most certainly should not be used around children.
Call child services and take this idiot back to court he does not have the common sense needed to be a parent and his visitation rights need to be revoked!
