Just exactly what it sounds like. The commander of the unit is changing -- the previous commander is retiring, or has been reassigned, and a new commander is taking over.

The Change of Command ceremony is a formal military parade that acknowledges that fact. I hope the weather is nice for you -- a change of command in the rain can be pretty miserable. Otherwise, enjoy the day!

A Change of Command in the military is between Officers having command authority.

Don't confuse this with Change of Responsibility; basically the same, except Change of Responsibility is for the Enlisted portion of the military also having authority.

It is when one officer whom is in charge of a company, battalion, brigade, or division gives responsibility to another officer.

Soldiers will stand out on a field while some sort of formal ceremony is performed. A few people will talk and then " the changing of the guard takes place. That is it. All you have to do is watch.
