The other answerer is wrong. I'm sleeping=I sleep, so we say je dors, je mange, j'avais mangé, j'avais allé. With 'en train de' we don't really use it that much unless you're saying 'i was reading a book then suddenly....' Hope that helps.

(I wouldn't use "je suis en train de" unless I was annoyed at the person for asking--well ok so maybe for sleeping)

J'étais en train de manger would be "I was eating". For " Ï had been eating you'd need "J'avais été en train de manger"--sounds very awkward though I think.

And j'avais été en train d'aller

Without any context at all, I agree with Dori. And "j'avais alle" is incorrect "j'etais alle" is the proper form.
