In 1824 revival (Palmyra-Manchester revival) was the cause for Joseph's mother , two brothers and a sister to join the Presbyterian church. They only were members for 4 years. This same year Joseph was Baptized and became a member of the Baptist church. However in 1821 Joseph Smith had became interested in the Methodist church. and it 1828 he tried to became a member of a Methodist church in in Harmony Pennsylvania.

Joseph Smith had limited involvement with organized religion in his early childhood.. He attended meetings of several different religions but was not a "member" of any one religious sect..

Actually, he was considered an excellent Methodist 'exhortor' for a young man (mid teens). Curiously, this was supposedly AFTER his talk with God who told them not to join a church. He never told the minister about it, so the 'persecution' thing is difficult to verify.
