Six answers so far and not one has even attempted to answer my question. This is sad if we do not even know this.

You know Stone I've just been studying this. As was already stated it "cleans" out your mind and brain. so you are more aware and receptive to what the Lord is trying to say. The book I was just reading (Pastoral Ministry) said that quite often you don't get the answers you may be seeking during the fast, but after it's over. I haven't fasted much over the years, but I'm learning it's an important part of keeping focused on the Lord....I told you about how I did a Daniel fast (a partial fast - for me one meal.) this week and wasn't hungry or get a hunger headache like I normally do if I miss a meal. I know God was honoring what I was doing. I didn't do it for a specific answer but part of being still and knowing that He is God. And I found during that time it was easier to focus on my studies about Pastoral Ministry and my relationship with Him.

The Bible talks about praying and fasting in Matthew and fasting was a way to show Gods love and to deny yourself to pray for others.

Because I have a medical condition I am not allowed to fast fully however I am allowed to fast one meal once in a while.

Jesus fasted for 40 days 40 nights. I apologize Brother Stone that I am not really sure about fasting this is all I know and I hope it helps.

It's putting other things first before the urges of your body. It shows yourself and God that you can control your urges and passions and devote yourself. As a Mormon, I fast once a month for 24 hours. It may not seem like a long time, but it is to me. But I have learned through the whole fasting process how to control myself and my thoughts, words, and deeds. It helps to put you in that right mind set to worship as well.

lol, well i think i'll TRY to answer ur question. christians are supposed to fast when they want to ask forgiveness from God, want deliverance, want a closer relationship with God, want to get an answer from God,etc. personally right now i'm fasting for my sunday school teacher, because there are some church elders that are trying to kick him out of church. 2 weeks ago i was fasting for myself because i wanted to be closer to God. on a normal basis i fast every tuesday. fasting on a regular basis will teach you discipline and get you ready for the final battle. Jesus even said that the disciples didn't have to fast because He was in their presence but once He left they had to pray and fast. so Christians should pray and fast on a regular basis.

Fasting for short periods of time (a couple of days or so) cleans toxins from your body, especially when the fastor drinks water or vegetable juice, so that you can more clearly take in God's Word. I wouldn't suggest a forty-day fast like the ancient prophets; the prophets of old ate cleaner food, drank cleaner water, and breathed fresher air than what we have available to us in the age of environmental and spiritual pollution, so they were stronger and healthier than we are now. They could do a forty-day fast standing on their heads:).
If you try a forty-day fast nowadays, you could get sick or meet the Lord a lot quicker than you had hoped.

So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. Everything that you eat or drink, and anything else you do, for that matter, should always be a good witness of Him. Your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit.

Fasting does not mean not to eat, it means fasting in something that for you will be a sacrifice, like no watching television for a day or something that is hard for you to be without.

I think that if you have it on your heart to fast, it is because you are being distracted by things. Fasting can sometimes help to "focus" a person and submit them to the will of God.

It helps us to focus on Him--I'm reminded of 2 scriptures, "I humbled my soul with fasting" & "this kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting."
