The main concerns should be whether you have the time to care for three dogs, whether you have the money (which should include setting some aside for emergency expenses as well as expected ones), and how your current dogs will feel about it. I's try getting the male used to other dogs before you bring a new one home. If he can't adjust, you will probably have to take the new dog back, so it's preferable that you figure out if your current dog can cope before you get a new one.

If you can take care of another dog and afford to feed a larger breed then I say go for it. You could rescue a large breed dog from the pound, or buy a full blooded dog. Either way, I don't think you'll be disappointed with a large breed.
I have 2 St.Bernards, 1 Lab, and a small breed mutt, and my larger breed dogs are so much more lovable and playful towards me.

There are reasons for limiting the number of pets.
1. Time. Each dog deserves at least 2 hours with you. Do you have that kind of time?
2. Expense. Each dog deserves regular checkups, vaccinations, good food, registration (license) etc. Can you afford this?
3. Some communities have limits on the number of pets you can have in one house. This is to deter hoarders and for sanitation purposes. Check with your community on how many dogs you can legally keep.
Consider these three things first - then make a decision.

No I have two very large dogs plus rescues/foster dogs that come in and out of my home. At one time for 2 years we had 2 Rotties, 1 St Bernard, 1 Akita, 2 German Shepherds and it was fine. Just make sure you are up to the commitment, expense and time. Those factors are always the biggest problem for people.

It depends where you live. If you live in a large home with a big backyard or farm with plenty of space for the to run around then go for it. If you live in a small apartment i wouldn't. Personally I have two dogs, a Bichon Frise and a German Shepherd mix, and I want more, but I don't have the space for it. If I lived on a farm I probably have about 6 or 7.

it really depends on how large of a place you live in. in an apartment more than 1 dog is usually a bad idea but in a house with a decent size backyard there is no reason why you can't support 3-5 dogs. I know people who own acres of land and tend to have upwards of 5 dogs.. it really is based on whether you can handle it or not.

"too many" for one person is one dog. "too many" for another person might be a dozen dogs. It depends on what you can handle individually and financially. I have two and don't think I could handle a third and still be able to provide them each with enough attention (not to mention the vet bills!).
If you do get a third, you need to be prepared to handle the stress and situation of your 1-year old dog not getting along with another dog. You should allow the new dog and your existing dogs to meet the newcomer away from home / on neutral territory to make sure they'll get along ok before you commit to the new one.

As long as you can financially take care of them then you can have as many dogs as you want. You might want to check with your city hall about any ordinances about how many dogs you can own. Some cities/towns will make you get a breeders license after a certain amount. I have 4 dogs and I love them all. We have 2 dauschunds, 1 Rottweiler, and 1 Chihauhau mix.

If you think you can handle it. I'll tell you, though. Taking them on a walk, by yourself is a pain. They'll keep crossing side of the sidewalk. I don't think there's such thing as too many dogs, but how many you can handle, it depends on if you wanna get a puppy, how many other people in the house there are, how many children live in the house, if other people are willing to help you train the dog. Many factors are at work there.
