... Or do only atheists have to explain, in exhaustive detail, every ethical position they hold?

TTC: Colleges are places of knowledge. Students come with some, graduates leave with none. It accumulates. (I don't know who first said that, but it's funny!)

Yep, I think it's just us atheists. A long long time ago I wrote a rant on this... about how atheists are always put on the spot, asked to defend themselves over and over, but no one thinks twice about questioning a Christian.

Odd... or sadly expected?

I'll suggest an answer although I don't consider myself a Christian (neither an atheist but rather a human on the path of discovery).
If I begin with the premise that all that is perceived and even non-perceived shares the same 'building blocks': ENERGY,
then any differences between various examples of 'matter' are simply differences in arrangement, not differences in origin.
Therefore, the violation or limiting of anything in existence also violates and diminishes everything else in existence.
Murder, therefore, actually hurts the murderer as much as the murdered - although the immediate consequences SEEM to put the victim at a disadvantage.
Societal judgment and ruling against murder is an act of self preservation of society as a whole.
Although murder is often justified by distinct social groups (e.g. one 'people' murdering another in a war), mankind as a whole doesn't have a chance to evolve beyond the present toddler age until all can be equally tolerated, accepted and loved.
To achieve this, religion itself MUST find an end. Even in this relatively harmless forum, the 'war' between religious groups abounds and contributes to DISharmony.
The two most militant religions I am aware of are christians and muslims.
Both are based on extreme manipulative techniques which are geared to foster separationism rather than unity.
Nobody has to explain any ethical position - unless they put a high value on the opinions of others.
Such an 'other-dependence' suggests a certain insecurity in one self.
To quote the bible: 'judge not lest you be judged' - is actually a pretty good prescription for living. Hey, if it's good, it's good :)
How about rephrasing it thus: let nobody judge you, and you don't have to judge anyone else.

We Christians do have an answer and its found in the Word of God. Atheists on the other hand don't have anything to back up their answers except what they think is reality. I know i can say that true Christians - not the hypocrites, have experienced God working in their lives and so not only do we have His Word, but personal experiences. What do atheists have to use? What they believe to be logic which by the way, with logic could be disposed of? We cannot force people to believe but we just have to pray for them and if they choose to reject God, we can only try to make this life as best for them as possible as its the only one they'll have.

As far as murder, well besides a biblical explanation you and me have no right to take away what belongs to someone else especially their very lives. Can you imagine if everyone thought it ok to kill? Why you probably wouldn't be around to ask your questions! So can you explain why it would be alright to murder then? No matter how evil or wicked a person may behave, there is no reason to end a life especially when one can talk things through and work them out like decent people not like brutes.

Murder is wrong because its taking away the options and choices of another person and taking away a living being from others. That is the best I can do.

No...no one has to explain in detail their own ethical position...I would prefer no one explain anything in exhaustive detail because I probably will not even read it.

simple. Murder is a willful act that a person or group of people do to someone or a group of persons such as during the Civil Rights era and before.

In war you have killing, this will never change. The difference is that they are not deliberately doing so just because they want to for whatever reason.

In World War 2 you had murder within killing. Think about the battles the enemy was engaged in with us and then look at the death camps, some of the prison camps, and death camps within prison camps

OUR

POW's

were in such as the infamous Stalag 13; if I have the correct prison camp. Also, remember the civil war? Remember Anderson the infamous confederate prison camp? Now can you see the difference?

well all i know is that when I'm asked to prove or explain why I believe something is wrong or right, I utilize my super great reasoning skills. And I also know that when Christians are asked to explain why murder or other debatable issues are wrong or right, they're quick to answer "because it says so in the Bible," or "because God says/said so."

Murder is a sin, because God calls it sin. "Thou shall not kill" is as clear as it gets. Doesn't mean that we shouldn't defend ourselves, both individually and as a nation, so don't get it twisted simply to discredit christianity. You need not go into any detail about your ethical positions. God gave us all a free will. If you have therefore chosen to reject Him, that is certainly your choice. No other explanation is necessary.

Seems to me you never shut up so I'd think you already have the answer you're looking for. Seems your agenda for the day is complete:
1) mock Christians
2) sit around and do nothing
3) mock Christians

Say, are you on company time?

Seriously..how far would a society get that didn't include a prohibition against murder?

Maybe the Israelites were to sun stroked and needed a written reminder?

From a religious point of view, I think the only acceptable answer is because the Bible says so. I am not saying this to make fun or be obnoxious. It is just that if you are going to get your morals from the Bible, there is no point or reason to justify it any further.
