You can't just get a free dog. If you aren't in the financial situation to get one, then don't get one. What's next? When you get your free dog... are you gonna ask for free food? Free crates? Free collar? Leashes? Get a little more money first, then buy a dog.

First of all, get caught up on the bills. Be open with the kids about it. "Kids, We had to pay this much to see if Fido could get better. And even though he didn't make it, we still have to pay this much to the vet. It's ok because he really tried to save Fido's life - but we can't get a new dog until these bills are paid first. And after that, we have to save up $300 to pay for a new dog from the pound." That way you can, as a family, work out a plan to pay down the bills faster - like giving up treats or meals out or something like that.
Start a Fido Fund - put your spare change into a can every day. Kids, when we have this much money (vet bills plus cost of dog) we can go to the shelter to get a new dog. The kids can collect aluminum cans and hold lemonade stands etc. this summer to help earn a new Fido.
Ask Grandparents to contribute to the Fido fund instead of separate gifts to the kids.
Brown bag your lunch every day and contribute what you would have spent on lunch - to the Fido fund.
Give up beer, soda, gum, candy and tobacco - and put the money into the Fido Fund.
The whole idea is that the family should be working towards being able to pay the bills down and then pay for a new dog.
In the meantime, scour the want-ads and local bulletin boards for a free dog. BUT do that AFTER the bills are paid up.

I'm sorry about your loss. If you don't have the money know I would consider waiting. If your kids have any birthday money maybe they would consider chipping in? If you were to get a dog for free, it there could be a possibility that it could be in bad health, just because a lot of people don't give dogs away for free. I don't know where you live but In Sudbury Mass, there is a shelter called Buddy Dog Humane Society, where the dogs to adopt are 225.00 and I believe they are 250.00 for puppies. Here is the website if you are interested www.buddydoghs.com
sorry I couldn't get it to link. Good luck to you and I hope you are able to find another dog at a reasonable price!

The best way to find a suitable purebred dog is through the American Kennel Club's breed rescue organization. They generally look for their breeds in local shelters to save them from euthanasia, which is why it is sometimes hard to find a particular breed in a shelter. They try to find homes that fit the personality of the dogs in their breed. You did not mention which type of Welsh Corgi you had, so I will provide the links to both varieties below.
Here is the link to the Cardigan Welsh Corgi breed rescue:

Here is the link to the Pembroke Welsh Corgi breed rescue:

Good luck!

Check craigslist.com. I read several adds of people giving away dogs for free when I was looking for an affordable veterinarian in the area. Some of them even had the first set of shots and microchip. I'm not from your area, but I bet you'll be able to find something or to post your own add asking for your new pet.

I'm not sure about a free dog - but I can recommend not getting one if you cannot afford the $300 from a backyard breeder. Maybe you could rescue, but you'll need to show proof that you can afford medical expenses, quality food, ect. I would suggest waiting and not take on a huge liability as a pet right now.
Good luck and sorry about your loss.

Well look in the newspaper for giveaway dogs. If I were you I would wait and pay off all those bills before I got another dog. Your new dog is just going to add to the piles of bills and you don't want that. Ask someone if you can walk their dog sometime. They might be happy to let you do it.

It may not be for ''free'', but you can check Petfinder classifieds and Craigslist.org to see if any local residents have an accidental litter that they need a home for.
Other than that, consider waiting until you are financially stable again, because with a new dog, comes new fees (vaccinations, spay/neuter, and any potential health problems).

Keep looking in shelter....older dogs should not cost 300 dollars from a shelter. Try PetFinder also.

Keep an eye on your local newspaper. Or you can try www.craigslist.com. Sometimes you will come across a free dog, if not some are reasonably priced.
