it's a way to dissipate anger, frustration and/or pain. i mean, doesn't it feel good to say some really choice curse words when you've done something dumb, or dropped that hammer on your big toe?
purely psychological, but it really feels good to release the negative with just few choice words.
of course, there are those who never learned to speak normally and operate on the belief that curse words are mainstream language. if these folks had to stop cursing, they'd have to stop talking...

When it happens, it makes me feel more terrible than before and more susceptible to impatience. Each time, it takes less and less in a situation to make me burst out with them. It might feel good the second after we do it, but we can get used to it and it uglifies us inside AND out. Wow...I've never used ugly as an action word. score one for me.

I think it's a sign of frustration, but definitely not necessary !
I have been guilty myself-but have learned to control it.
