ive been lots of meds for bipolar, borderline personality disorder, bad depression, nothing has worked, i also have been hospitalized twice in a psych ward. i am considering ECT but many people tell me it's got a lot of risks. has anyone been thru ECT and did it work for you? any side effects? please help.

well physically it won't be bad since the technique has been refined so well, it's just a few seconds of therapy and you can hardly feel it. Use it only a a last resort

I am a schizophrenic outpatient. I have never had ECT but have met and talked to several people who have. If you haven't already done it look up "electroconvulsive therapy" on Yahoo! search. Wikipedia has a good summary. My personal opinion of ECT is it is a primitive way to treat something you don't understand. It is like hitting a sick person in the head with a club in order to cure him. It almost always has cognitive side effects including memory loss and any beneficial effect does not usually last.
If you want it to treat depression, there are alternate treatments which again may not help. My personal experience with DEPRESSION is that it IS DUE TO A NEGATIVE MIND SET and can only be lifted by willing oneself to think and do positive things. How successful any treatment is is due entirely to how willing the patient is to permanently changing how he/she thinks and does. It takes a lot of individual effort.
