Things started late so if you did not like the regularly timed shows you could turn to TBS and enjoy there. BUT now all the shows seem to be starting a minute early and/or running a minute over the hour, which not only screws up taping and watching from one channel to another, but totally inconsiderate of the broadcasters.

It was counter programming. If you were watching a program that ran over 5 min into everybody elses, they figured you would stay with them on TBS because you don't want to get into another show late. This tactic was pioneered on KTLA in Los Angeles in the late 1940's

To prevent you from changing the channel. When your show on TBS was over the shows on another channel already started. People don't like to miss the beginning of their shows.
