Great question. A lot of us think that the best way to serve the community is to volunteer with a charity organization. Hopefully we as Americans are a little more creative than that, but it is a great place to start.
Nobody cares about helping others if they are consumed with their own problems. The irony is that your problems really fade when you start helping other people, so all it really takes is a little push sometimes. Or something catastrophic to happen to you in your life to shake you from your own complacency--like the death of a loved one, or a problem that you really cannot solve yourself. Needing help, and acknowledging that all of us need help on some level, is the first step in knowing that we need to give to the community--since there are others like us out there.
So, what does all of that mean? If you are a self-centered person, consumed with accumulating things and getting ahead in life at the expense of others, the best service you can do for the community is to avoid procreating and teaching these "skills" to your children. Fortunately, the people who live this way are not very much interested in having children due to the fact that they will feel obligated to someone besides themselves--so there is hope.
The community starts with the people in your circle of acquaintance. Who do you know that has problems that need others help? What are they doing to help themselves? Are they capable/have resources (this is not only about money, but about time and people in their lives)? People who lack social networks go and build them on their own, usually surrounding themselves with people who want to use and manipulate them. Help your friends and family gain confidence by pouring your time and energy into them for their benefit--you will find that you will always have friends, and your life will be full of problems AND solutions.

Community service is just that service to the community. You volunteer for organizations or programs whose vision and or goals you support.
Individually you help out in whatever ways you can, without asking for pay or a thank you. Even if it's just a smile and a good morning , or a thank you from the sales person. Or holding the door open for someone with a lot of packages or pushing a baby stroller or a wheelchair.
It's shovelling an older person or disabled's person sidewalks or driveway in winter. Picking up trash along a road or not throwing trash out your car window.
It's treating everyone and everything you meet or come in contact with dignity.
That's what community service is.

To me, it means that I can make a difference in my own neighborhood and community.
It doesn't matter how, how often, or what you do to make a positive difference. It only matters that you do get involved somehow.
