I was wondering what the housing situation is like and what it is close to (museums, stores etc.) Why are there so few graduates? Is it just that a lot are young and don't know how to study well yet?

I am sorry, I was unclear. My husband is thinking of going to the DLI, I was wondering about the on-base housing. I am really excited about the aquarium, I have a two-year old who will love it!

The reason for my study question is because have read responses from so many people who failed who just say they didn't put the effort in, didn't want to study. We are wondering if we should really be intimidated by the huge drop-out rate, but we both have degrees and have taken ancient Greek and Latin from a very competetive institution...

all DLI students are housed at OMC, which is the old Ft Ord about 20-30 minutes away. There is virtually no waiting list, although you may only be given the option to reside in one of the older WW2 era units. they are in the middle of rebuilding them all though, and th enew ones are pretty nice, although they do have issues.

DLI is extremely tough and yes, many kids do fail out. they are expected to eat think breathe and dream in their language. they are taught by native speakers and there is a lot of extrra studying required outside of the classroom.

I'll be honest, the Aquarium did NOT impress me. I found others that were much better, including Baltimore's and Virginia Beach's.

there are no real malls in Monterey, but there is one in Salinas, but that is Gang territory. There is a nice outlet center in Gilroy about 45 minutes away. Plenty of things to do in and around the Monterey area, including Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row. 150 miles of Rec trail all along the coast was one our favorite things to do.

The Defense Language Institue from what I understand is part of the military, it is where soldiers go to learn languages they are then able to use in their training. I live in Monterey. Housing is expensive for civilianes but I believe there is housing for military DLI students. Theres not much in the way of musuems and stores close to the DLI but in Monterey we do have a small mall (with a movie theater) and the famous aquarium of course. I'm not sure why there are so few graduates. And I'm not sure how to answer your last question. I have met a few men from DLI and they are young (18-25) but they do know how to study. Its kinda of funny, you'll see them around town practicing their specific language.

If you have a chance of going to DLI in Monterey, DO IT..! The entire region is the most beautiful you'll find anywhere.

When I attended many years ago on-post housing was available at nearby Ft. Ord, but I believe Ord has been closed.

As for the drop out rate, we started with 18 students in my class (..Hungarian..) and ended up with myself and three others graduating. It's a tough row to hoe, but if you've an apptitude for languages, as you seem to, I'm sure you'll do just fine.

I lived in Pacific Grove for two years, and was stationed in the region three times.

The housing is expensive but your allowance should cover it. Get there early and spend some time looking around. I always managed to find affordable housing.

The area is one of the most beautiful places in the United States, however, you do get your share of cold, damp, foggy days. It's a peninsula.

Beautiful beaches but not suitable for swimming. Too cold. 17 mile drive is a must see. They'll charge you an admission but it's one of the best scenic drives you'll ever drive. Bring your camera. There is a museum in Monterrey and there are a lot of playgrounds for kids. You're within 2 hours of San Francisco, which has many museums.

The curriculum is difficult, but if you study you will do well and you will enjoy the experience.

My mom is from Monterey, CA. My dad met her when he was stationed at Ft. Ord (doesn't exist anymore. It's just DLI now. The post is shut down)

Monterey, is probably the most beautiful place I've ever been. I've lived in 6 states (VA, CA, WA, GA, MO, and AR) and seen 39, I've also seen AT LEAST 3 or 4 places on each of our 3 oceans. There is tons to do . I don't know about housing, but you're going to love it there none-the-less.

it is Monterey.. and it is a lovely town. Variety of housing. DLI is rather secretive... military, intelligence, State Department types.
