dont worry about this too much because if you press and make it an issue he will only do it more, its a comfort thing. i used to suck my thumb until my early twenties but over the past few years i have stopped. i dont no why maybe i grew out of it or something has changed my psychological well being but dont judge your son just love him for who he is and trust he will be ok if you are overbearing this will not happen. im not a father but understand your concern.

Well my sister sucked her thumb until she had her first child, she was 24!!
Often they don't even know they are doing it, so with my sister we just kept reminding her when she did it in public so in the end she only sucked her thumb when she was in bed or very tired.
She has no psychological damage so I would not overly worry about this. I sucked my finger and decided to stop myself at the age of 16 years. He will stop himself when he is ready its not really a big deal.

If he is 18 he will have to want to stop to actually do it....
If he does, they make some bitter tasting stuff that you can put on your fingers that make them taste horrible.... however that will only remind him that he is doing it so he can stop asap to break the habit, if he continues to suck it in a couple mins he will just suck it all off

I have heard of this occasionally before. But truly I have no solution. It is just weird for an adult to do it.
He must have some deep seated psychological problems.

My friend was the same. Tie some string around his thumbs, that worked!

Give him a clip round the ear and tell him to grow up.

you can try talking to him, you can tell him the consequences of doing that.....but don't be mean about it......well.....just try to scare him a little bit but not too much....my little sis did that and I just told her that she will get "thumb cancer" if she keeps on doing that and she never did it since.....but I dunno if that will work with him but you can try it......Chicks don't dig when people still suck on their thumb....it's nasty..
