become one of the thousands of tourists that mill around and crowd the streets downtown all day - all smithsonian institutions are free, a lot of other museums have donations (national trust sites), go to old town alexandria - lots of old houses, museums, restaurants, etc

Check out the National Mall and Tidal Basin. There you can see all of the free Smithsonian museums, the Capitol building, the White House, and all of the monuments. From there you can easily take public transportation to anywhere in the city to check out other areas, as well.

Rock Creek Park is pretty. The National Zoo (Woodley Park metro station) is great whether or not you have kids.

Everyone of the museums are exceptionally well done. Be sure to also visit the capital and Supreme Court buildings.

All of downtown is about tourism....the Smithsonians, the Memorials etc. And it's all free.
