Hi all on 2 teeth right by the gum line there is this hard white thicker coating i can't scale it off either.
It doesn't look like tartar as i thought tarter (calcius sp?) was yellow.
It doesn't look like the white patches you get from fluoride.
Any idea??? and what i can do to get rid of it.
I meant to ask my dentist when i went for cleaning 2 weeks ago.

SWEETNESS,

AS TARTAR (AKA, CALCULUS) AGES IT WILL CHANGE COLORS. IT STARTS BEING WHITE, OFF-WHITE, YELLOW, BROWN, AND FINALLY BLACK.
YOU HAVE TO GO BACK AND HAVE THE DENTIST REMOVE IT. ALSO ASK HIM/HER ABOUT BRUSHING TECHNIQUE TO MAKE SURE ALL THE TOOTH SURFACES TO THE GUM LINE ARE PROPERLY GETTING BRUSHED TO AVOID THE SOFT PLAQUE FRO TURNING INTO TARTAR.

Tartar is often white. It doesn't have to be yellow. It sounds like tartar to me. You could always call the dentist's office and ask. Tell them you have a question and forgot to ask when you were in for the cleaning. I'm willing to bet that they'll tell you it was tartar.

If it's soft and comes off easy its plaque, which is a bacterial buildup. You can remove it by proper brushing with a good toothbrush. If it's hard and doesn't come off, it's most like tartar, which is hardened plaque. Only the dentist can remove tartar.
