Go hiking, visit a state park, get everyone a kite & go kite flying, go bike riding, go to sports museums (can get kind of expensive), many cities/towns have "car nights" where peolpe that are into spiffed up cars all go to one place - your boys would probably LOVE that - same thing for motorcycles, go to a local motocross race, try & see if you can locate a local farmer who will let you take your boys through the barns to see cows & pigs & chickens & goats etc. I grew up in a rural area & saw alot of cows - but many kids don't - it is really pretty cool! Find a resevoir/lake & teach your kids how to fish, rent a canoe & go canoing - easy stuff, but very valuable memories & so much better than TV & the movies.
Maybe you could all do volunteer work together at an animal shelter or food kitchen - a good way to build character for your boys, and do we ever need men with character in this world!

I agree that if you try to make everyone happy, especially when you don't have much money, you'll end up pleasing no one and making yourselves miserable. Also, you don't give a limit on funds, but be aware that there are some incidentals that will cost money before you get started. These are things like the officiant fee, the license, etc. If you have a maid of honor and a best man, you'll need to get them each a gift. Obviously, it doesn't have to be expensive, but this needs to be included. The first thing I'd do is ditch the idea of a church wedding. The fee will be higher. Most importantly, it doesn't seem to matter to you and your fiance, so just let it go. Your dad will still get to walk you down an "aisle" but it won't be a church aisle. However, make sure he understands that if it wasn't for this, you would have done the courthouse thing. He'll be honored. On venue, the ideal thing would be someone's house and yard. It's free and also easy for whatever food and drink you provide. If not that, try a VFW or other type of hall, but these do have a fee and also very few will look ok without at least some decorations. Edit: On Valentine's comment, this isn't exactly true. If you're limited to a cake and punch type reception, then have it mid afternoon. This is perfectly ok per etiquette. However, if your reception takes place during a lunch or dinner mealtime, you must provide something additional. For a small wedding this can be done very cheaply, but it does need to be done.

Kids never get tired of the zoos. We have farms around here in VA...and they are free. Are there any around where you live?
Also, it's fruit season. There are a lot of farms where you can go and pick your own fresh strawberries. That would be fun for the family.
I remember playing board games with my family when I was younger. Is there a way you can all get together to make dinner (even the boys could help) and after dinner and icecream maybe, you could play Uno or Chutes and ladders.

Your desire to spend special time with your family is wonderful. Here are some ideas:
Go on a nature trail. So much fun!
Have a family game night
Go to different parks/playgrounds
Go swimming at a neighborhood high school (if it is open for swim after hours) or to the beach (weather permitting)
Check out free days at museums (maybe free passes are available at your library) Bring your lunch!
Check your neighborhood newspaper for seasonal ideas---also the internet!

Years ago, raising my family, we were very poor. I would make sandwiches (even pb and jelly) and go to a park, where there was a small body of water with fish. Have a picnic. Get a loaf of bread. Let the kids feed the fish the loaf of bread. The food was the best--lol--in the open air and the kids were free to run and play. A couple of summers, this was our special treat.

I had the same problem. My kids believe toys will be the end of their boredom. So, I took them on a nature walk. Walking changes the mind around. And the fresh air is so good for you. We take along a little bug box and catch bugs, and salamanders. We saw old trees and counted all the rings on one of them.
We found a hugh rock and sat and ate the lunch we packed before we left. It was nice spending time, without spending any money. We got to talk about school, and their friends. It was a nice change and I think they really got a lot out of changing their mind around.

My husband and I used to take our 2 daughters to Borders book store about once a week. We could never get bored there. There is a section where kids can sit down with books. There is music to listen too in those players that are all over the store. So many books to look at. And, what a great thing to teach your children...the value of literacy. And, hey, it's free!!

I never had money for my girls growing up but I still to this day (they are now 25 and 27) talk about remember when we...... We went to the Library and just read books for hours, walked to the museum and looked, rode the bus to downtown, walked around looked at buildings and people and rode it back. Went camping all the time. We used to make a tent in the living room with sheets and the couch cushions and pop popcorn and sit with the lantern and pretend we were in the woods when it was to cold. Grow a garden, seeds are available at the dollar store and you just need to watch your stuff grown. Kids remember the true fun things in life growing up, not how much you spent doing it. Enjoy....................................

Well, I know what u mean. Everything is so expensive. I dont know where you live but if you have access to a beach, river or lake you could make that fun. Go have a day at the beach..all u need is sunblock towels and floaties! you can swim or have a picnic at the lake..camp out and fish at the river! At least you have boys who will enjoy this...

The beach or lake is always a great time!!! Make a loaf of PBJ sanwiches and a cooler of drinks, bring a bucket of matchbox cars and build a town with your children...I do this with my children(6, 8, 12, 15) and my 15yo daughter and hubby all get involved, you cant help it. It is fun to "find" things to use as stores, bars (lol), dance clubs, houses, malls...build it all and with little to no $$ costs to you!!! You can also do this in your flowerbeds!!!!
