I am living outside of the u.s. and I think I lost my passport. I know that I can get another one at the u.s. embassy, but can anyone tell me how long it usually takes?

The sooner you take care of this, the better. It is important to report the loss to the US embassy as soon as possible in order to prevent the misuse of your document.

The American Citizen Services officer will take your information and then request a new passport for you from the States. It would probably take at least three weeks, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

You'll need:

1. Evidence of U.S. citizenship. The most common evidence of citizenship is a birth certificate (original or certified copy), previous U.S. passport, or naturalization certificate.
2. Proof of identity. The most common are driver’s license, previous passports, school identification card, school diploma, residency card or any other document with name and picture. If the applicant is a minor, family photographs of the child in the United States will have to be presented.
3. Three (3) passport photos, 2”x 2” on a white background. Instant photos are not acceptable.
4. Fee of $97 for adults (16 and older) and $82 for children. Exact change is required.
5. For applications for children under 14 years old, please read the general information.

Passport replacement wait times depend on the completeness of the application and the embassy concerned. For a more accurate timeframe consult the embassy in your location.**

Go to the US embassy asap. Also by some chance if you have one of American Expresses credit card they provide a service to help you get a replacement passport. If you do not have the AE card, then go to the embassy and they can tell you how long it will take to get you a replacement.

Execute an affidavit of loss of your passport and include it in applying for a new passport. The period for claiming the new passport is basically the same as that of your previous application.
