"The planned attack was for ten American divisions, mainly on the south side of the salient, and four French divisions, covering the tip and northerly side, to advance and close off the long-occupied salient. Pershing's further plan, to advance and take Metz, was cancelled by Foch with pressure from Haig.
On the 14th of Sept., there was a period of several hour when the first and second battalions lost contact with each other and with Lee. The first was in the Bois de la Montagne, where they encountered the enemy and drove them westward. A primary problem during this period was the lack of liason with the 89th Division, which had failed to advance on the division's left flank. Because of this the Boche (Germans) pressed the regiment hard and the losses suffered were higher than previously suffered at St. Mihiel."

It was called the Battle of the St Mihiel Salient, That is because the German Salient was a bulge sticking into the allied lines. The Germans could cram the Salient with artillery and fire behind the trenches. The allies had to reduce the salient in order to straighten out the lines and take that advantage from the enemy.

The Battle of Saint-Mihiel, fought September 12, 1918, was the first battle of World War I in which United States forces fought independently. U.S. troops captured Saint-Mihiel, a town in northeast France, and took 16,000 German prisoners
