There's two reasons why I haven't swallowed my spit in 2 days. Firstly, it's just too sore. I have NEVER had anything like this, and I've had everything from strep to sinus infections, etc. Even when I had my tonsils and adenoids removed (when I was older too, so it had many complications), my throat was still not this sore. Anyway, I also have so much post nasal drip that when I spit, it is yellow mucus, so I certainly don't want to swallow that.

So what I've been doing is spitting every 5 minutes or so, and then right after I spit (before the post nasal drip has time to collect in my mouth), I'll drink a whole glass of a carbonated drink all at once (i.e. gingerale, seltzer water, etc.) because the bubbles make it sting less. I figure that this is keeping me hydrated enough, despite all the spitting, because I'm producing the normal amount of urine. Is that alright to continue for another day or two until the soreness lessens?

Thanks for any help!

I did go to the doctor and was told that it's some flu that's going around. It's getting better day by day -- just the sore throat is still bad.

jazjam♥, I'm mixing them with some pedialyte (disgusting tasting, but whatever) just for that reason. :)

Yes, that should be fine. As long as you're drinking and staying hydrated, it's actually better that you're spitting out that phlegm and not swallowing it. It would make you very nauseas to continually swallow it. :)

Hope this helps! Get better soon!

I think the problem is not spitting or no spitting, but the fact that you are very ill. You must go to a doctor and get some medication, or this could turn to pneumonia.

nix the carbonated drinks! they might make your throat feel better, but for necessary hydration you need an electrolyte solution(like gatorade). carbonated drinks don't give you the nutrients your body needs, and you can still get dehydrated. i think you should see a dr. if possible so your condition doesn't get any worse. i'm sorry you feel so bad & i hope this information helps you out some. hope you get better soon.
