That the Catholic Church has the Foundational Truth that Jesus Christ is the Son of the Living God. That you must be born of God, born of His Spirit, cleansed by His blood, joint heirs with King Jesus & part of the family of God; and this is the key given to those who confess Jesus Christ their Lord & Savior and believe in their heart He raised from the dead an everlasting new Temple.
Don't Catholics understand that many different Christian Churches also hold the keys to the Kingdom of Heaven?
Peter isn't the only Priest. Jesus is the High Priest forever after the order of Melchezidek (High Priest & King). Because He is the one who shed His Blood for the remission of our sins.
That many of the "Catholics, through the Pope, only have the Keys..." Is unscriptural and adding to the Gospel Truth?

Misty040, Then how come the Greek word for Peter means piece of the rock and the Greek word for the foundational rock is massive rock? What Peter said is the key. Jesus is the Rock foundation, & the 12 Apostles are the foundational Apostles. Not just Peter. Jesus did give this key to all the Apostles listening. When Jesus said You He was including all of the Yous listening.

Misty, that is adding to the Gospel of Christ. I know the Catholic Church teaches this, but it is wrong. The Catholic Church isn't the only one with the keys.

The keys are simple. Jesus said to Peter that it was Father God and not man who revealed this to him (Jesus Christ, the Son of the Living God). And not man. And on this Rock (Jesus Christ Is the Son of God) Jesus builds his Church and the gates of hell will not prevail. Many Churches are founded on this Rock. And that is that God draws us to Jesus and gives us faith in who Jesus Christ is. He is the Son of the Living God & the Resurrection & the life.
So, after reading answers about Catholic beliefs, I realize that they are wrong about Peter. Jesus Kingdom is a Heavenly Kingdom and also the Kingdom of God is within (through the Holy Spirit).

The twelve apostles were in Israel.
Paul was on his way to Damascus to torture, arrest and maybe kill christians.(the christian weren't in Rome and Paul wasn't a converted christian yet).
Paul converted on his way to Damascus
the remaining 11 deciples (not Judas) converted in Israel.
Day of Pentecost happened in Jerusalem.
Where did Jesus ask the deciples to meet Him after His resurrection.
what did the "pillars of the Jerusalem Church" shake with Paul about?
The first christians weren't in Rome but started in Jerusalem

If you study history, you cannot arrive at the conclusion that Peter was the head of the early church. 1. When the apostles held the council in Jerusalem, described in Acts 15, it was not Peter who made the final decisions. It was JAMES. The apostles then sent out letters to the outlying churches based on what JAMES had decided. Peter was no more than one voice of many at the council. 2. There are too many verses to post here in which Jesus proclaims no one but himself to be head of the church. 3. As has been pointed out repeatedly here,in 1 Peter 2:4-8 it is crystal clear that Jesus is speaking of himself as the foundation. It's a real stretch to imagine that just this one time he said, "After carefully teaching you all that I am the foundation, I'm now going to abdicate and make Peter head of the church." Utter rubbish. 4. You will not find historians or scholars - outside of the Catholic church - who support that claim. Even Justin Martyr refuted it. So, Peter never claimed it or behaved as if it were true, the other apostles never claimed it or behaved as if it were true, and Jesus never claimed it. All the proofs are against it, yet a student of history wonders why Protestants disagree with it? That is strange. A better question would be outside of one sentence that could have been (read certainly was) misconstrued, what evidence supports Peter as head of the early church? Answer - none. For longer proofs, two links are attached, assuming that you really want to know why.

*Is Catholic*
The keys are given to Peter alone. The reference that Jesus is making is to the Office of the Keys (sort of a prime minister) in the Davidic Kingdom (see Isaiah 22-22).
The fundamental mistake that you are making is the assumption that there are multiple sets of keys. That is illogical because Protestant groups believe differently from each other and thus would use the keys in contradictory manners.
The Bishops of the Church can and do share in the power of the keys when they are united with the Pope in the activity of teaching and handing on the faith.
The other fundamental mistake that you are making is to assume that Protestant pastors are of the Order of Melchezidek. They are not for they do not offer sacrifice and they would say they do not. So Protestant pastors do not share what Catholic priests have, that is access to the power of the keys through their bishop who is united to the Pope.
The Catholic Church teaches that there is only one Church and that protestant communities are not to be labeled church as that utterly lack a priesthood.
Where is the Church? The teaching of all the early Christians is where a Bishop conducts a right Eucharist.
And the idea of Peter not being in Rome is silly. Learn your history. No archeologist doubts that Peter went to Rome, was crucified and buried there. We have his bones and his tomb! And it is in scripture. The Church here in Babylon, united with you by God’s election, sends you her greeting, and so does my son, Mark” (1 Pet. 5:13, Knox). Babylon is a code-word for Rome.

But Jesus gave the keys to Peter...not to all the disciples. So it is scriptural.
Jesus said "Thou are Peter and on this rock (meaning Peter) I will build my church." Even protestant theologians now agree that Jesus was speaking to Peter...that Peter is the rock and Peter has been given the keys.
The giving of the keys refers to what was common at that time. When the king, master, was away for an extended period of time, he gave the "keys" to his right hand man. This person who held the keys was authorized in every way to act on the kings behalf in his absence. This person, who had the keys, was given authority over the kings household, properties, and people. This is what Jesus was referring to when he gave Peter the keys. He was giving him that type of authority. And that is the authority that has been passed down through papal succession.

Actually, claiming that he was speaking to all of them, when the original greek indicates that he spoke first to Peter, to identify the pun he was about to use (Peter = Petros = Rock). "I tell you that you are Peter, and on this Rock I will build my church." His switch from first person direct to third person indirect indicates he basically poitned at peter and said, "Hey, you're a rock," then turned to the other and said, "Yeah, he's a rock, and he's the foundation stone." The rest indicates he turns back to Peter and continues his direct conversation with Peter.
The idea he gave the keys to all the disciples is unbiblical. Forgiveness he gave all of them, but not the keys themselves.

Matthew 16:
He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"
16
Simon Peter said in reply, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God."
17
Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.
18
And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it.
19
I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
And of course, Peter with all those who believe in Christ as the son of the living God, created the first Church, and it was passed on,...
Just like St. Peter, we are called to build Jesus' Church, to spread the Word of God, to share with everyone the Faith in Christ.
All of us were given the keys to heaven (up to us if we want to make use of it), because in each of us, Jesus dwells, in each of us, the Holy Spirit works, and in each of us, God lives.

Catholics do not believe that all Protestants are going to hell. You were mis-informed.
We also do not believe that all Catholics are going to Heaven, but that is not for us to judge.
Peace!
