Those prohibitions that the religions made on the early times of man like eating of Pigs, meats with blood still on it, flesh of animals that were not in line with goats, sheeps and rams. Those who were told to clean their bodies before prayers, meditations, eating and offerings of foods, those having sex while their wives are having their monthly cycles, those homosexual activites of men, prostitutions and others that are abominable in the sight of God.
All of those mentioned above were not particularly for moral and religious issues only. In the absence of medical doctors and scientists that could warn the people of early civilizations on the effects of those abuses and carelessness, religions upon the inspirations taken from higher consciousness of man served as a health warnings which some Major religions such as the Jewish, Hindus, the Buddhists, Seventh Day Adventists and Jehovahs witnesses are finding it relevant to the modern day health warnings and reminders.
They help not just the spirits but also the well physical being of man. It is not that they should come as you were saying, they came even earlier than the civilizations we knew.

WARNING:
The Surgeon General, in conjunction with anyone who has a functioning brain, has deemed Religion hazordous to the heath of your mind, body and soul. Repeated abuse of Religion has been shown to cause unjustified feelings of superiority, as well as nausea, headaches, Emptying Bank Account Syndrome, violence, wars, hatred for your fellow man, and in general is in direct opposition to the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Pegnant women especially are advised not to abuse Religion.

Actually I read somewhere (in a secular magazine) that people who go to church live like 9 months longer than those who do not regularly attend church.... Interesting little health benefit.
