Word 2003 (and up) has many clipboards, Look under the Tools Tab > Options to enable it.

You can get the Office Clipboard to show up in Word versions earlier than Word 2007 by clicking the Edit->Office Clipboard menu item, and in Word 2007 by clicking the Clipboard list arrow on the ribbon's Home tab however, I suspect someone implemented some simple macros to do the CTRL-1, CTRL-2, etc. trick for you and, possibly, to pre-load the clipboard. There is only 1 clipboard but what you can do is run Notepad or Wordpad on the side and use both the clipboard and one of the aforementioned.
