As I child I was christened and had Godparents, 2 of which I am still close to today and have helped me through life. Now I'm pregnant myself, there are a couple of special people I would like to ask to be Godparent, but I am not religious and neither is my fiancè and the baby will not be christened, although I'd like an official naming ceremony. Is there a secular name for Godparents and can it be something official?

You want to have an official naming ceremony, but not a christening?

Send out invitation to a party to lots of family and friends announcing the birth of your child. At the party, introduce the child to everyone and announce that a couple of good friends will be honorary aunts and uncles and help you guide your child through life.

You will name the baby and it will be registered at the official office.
Godparents theoretically are responsible for the religious upbringing of their Godchild.
No doubt a family member or friend would look after a baby if anything happened to the parents.
Discuss with someone of your own choosing

Why, a "Godlessparent" of course!

Full marks to you for not pretending a Christening ceremony would be okay. God should not be invoked for anything that is not done in faith, without believing In Him. May you, your fiance, and your lovely baby have a super Naming Day and know the bonds of love that cannot be broken.

You call them good friends.

I would just take them aside and ask them privately if they would take care of my kids in case anything happened to me. If you want to make it official, write their legal custody of your children into your will or as a separate legal document.

There's really no reason to make a ceremony out of it.
