There are many Muslims Musicians, I am one.
The Quran tells Muslims to have faith in The Psalms received by some prophets, notably David. The Muslims who believe music is forbidden are those who do not read the Quran and blindly follow people who they take as Idols.
None of the Created provisions on earth are forbidden to Muslims. When any society speaks bad about the Arts and tries to convince people it is wrong, they are usually if not always, trying to control populations by censoring human expression. I am glad I follow the Quran and not the hypocritical so called religious leaders who oppress people and make up laws and label them "Islamic."
Artist :)

I think there are tonnes of Muslim and Jewish musicians and even pop stars out there. Go to www.youtube.com and look up "jewish numa numa" that's a jewish pop song. I come from Singapore and there are many Malay and Indian Muslims here and in Malaysia who are pop stars!! I am not familiar with them but the "Singapore Idol" both this year and last year had Muslim winners...

There are muslims who feel music is banned by the quran just as there are christians who feel the same way. Others feel that music is allowed as long as it doesn't lead to sin (also a common christian belief).
Still, the basic answer to your question lies in your qualification "the western world is familiar with." There are muslim musicians, even in modern genres such as hip-hop and rap.

Music in Islam is a widely-debated topic. My personal feelings are that you can listen to whatever you want as long as you don't take the messages in the lyrics too seriously.

iT'S AGAINST THE LAW IN SOME COUNTRIES LIKE iRAN, but everyone has it "behind closed doors", or bribe authorities to look the other way for wedding music.
The clerics allow "singing", that is, intonation, during the recital or reading of Islamic verses or poems. Men gather together in designated homes to take turns doing this.

There are many many muslim musicians and singers. I just think the west hasn't payed attention to them yet because unless your singing booty booty booty rocking everywhere, then western people don't pay attention.

All forms of music is forbidden in Islam......that which is permitted (at times of Eid or at weddings) is what is know as Anasheed (Nasheeds).
This consists of male voices only accompanied by the 'duff' (a small handheld drum (like a tambourine but without the cymbals)
Islaamic Nasheed
Shaykh Saalih ibn Fowzaan al-Fowzaan

A considerable amount of discussion has taken place with regards to ‘Islaamic Nasheeds’; some have given a formal, legal opinion of it being permissible, whilst others hold them to be an alternative to music. What is your opinion with regards to the above, your eminence?
The phrase ‘Islaamic Nasheeds’ is incorrect, because it is a newly invented phrase. Hence, for this reason there are no such things [known as] ‘Islaamic Nasheeds’ in the books of the pious predecessors, and from the rulings of those who are considered and relied upon to be from amongst the people of knowledge.
Rather what is well known is that the Sufis [1] are the ones who have accommodated and incorporated these ‘Islaamic Nasheeds’ into their Deen, and they name this Deen of theirs as (اÙسÙ
اع) ‘As Samaa’[2].
In this day and age, when different parties & groups have arisen and increased, this has resulted in all these groups & parties adopting their own fanatical zealous anthems which they have named as ‘Islaamic Nasheeds’. This labelling of ‘Islaamic Nasheeds’ has no authenticity or soundness [in our Deen]. Therefore, it is not permissible to accept these Nasheeds or to circulate and promote them amongst the people.
Allaah is the possessor of all prosperity & success.
