It may be the thrust bearing in the clutch which is worn.
To check if it is, drive the car with your foot OFF the clutch pedal. When the squeaking noise starts gradually apply pressure to the clutch pedal. If the noise stops it's the bearing that's faulty and will need replacing.
If this is the case then you might as well replace the whole clutch with a 3 in 1 kit whilst the gearbox is out.

Hope this helps

That explains it...!

I had been wondering were my ex went. (grin).

Actually, when you say it does NOT happen when you step on the brakes do you mean that it STOPS or that the brakes do not cause it to happen.

If the former, then you may simply have something rubbing on a rotor or caliper. If the latter then I tend to go with the loose fan belt concept as a first item to check. After that we need more detail (inside the car, outside.. front, rear... can you make it happen by rocking the car at a dead stop, etc..)

if the noise disappears when you use the brakes it could be the rear brake pads sticking causing the brakes to bind slightly.just requires the the pads removing and cleaning unless they are worn out then they will need replacing. dont know of a common fault with clutch release bearings making noises. if the noise is comming from the clutch/gearbox area then the gearbox will need to be removed and the cluch and gearbox inspected.
