If you study Quran and the Hadith (traditions) of the Holy Prophet Muhammad(pbuh) you will get the all the answers to your question. Only thing that I would like to add is that we Muslims do not burn our brides for dowry or tell her to commit sati on her dead Husbands pyre. We don't have Dev Dasi's (prostitutes in the name of God). The most respected woman in a Muslim's life is the Mother. And she is a woman.

Islam holds women in high esteem. The Qur'an regards men and women as equal in personal and basic values; but they have different functions that they complementary. Woman is the masterpiece of Allah's creation. Woman is that reaction into whose delicate hands the future of the world is
entrusted.

The real foundation of woman's dignity is the same as that of man. Both are equally liable to fall into wicked ways and equally capable of following the right path. Both are equal in worth but different in certain qualities in their roles. The path of progress is open to both alike. the reward of achieving it is the same for both. In some things men excel women while in others women surpass men. Each of the five pillars if Islam is as important for women as for men and there is no discrimination in this regard.

The Prophet (PBUH) repeatedly urged Muslim men to treat their women folk with kindness and respect. Allah's Messenger is reported to have said: " The best among you is the one who is the best towards his wives. The most perfect amongst believers in faith is he who is best in manner and kindness to his wife."

The Qur'an gave protection to women. It forbade the Bedouin costum of killing unwanted infant girls. It gave women a share in family inheritance in the seventh century. European women had to wait till the nineteenth century before the gained legal rights over their own property. A divorced woman can keep her dower, she is entitled support from her husband and also can marry again.

Islam is the only religion that gave protection to women.

I think in a true practice of the faith they get a great deal of respect. People judge the whole covering up thing, but they shouldn't. A mere 100 years ago, everyone covered up for modesty. Its a pretty recent thing to walk around half naked.

"Speak to them words of kindness and joy" is what God/Allah wants men to treat there women. Both men and women are equal in Islam. Islam was the first religion to bring them alot of rights which women could just dream of in a pre-islamic Arab society which was fully in darkness!

Abdul A already said it. When prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was asked by a man who deserved the most of his respect, he replied "your mother", when asked a second time he replied "your mother", when asked a third time he replied again "your mother", only on the fourth time did he reply "your father"
