Guy 1:"Your religion's wrong!"
Guy 2: "No, your religion's wrong!"
Guy 1: "How dare you! I have strong faith in my religion! I'm willing to die for it!"
Guy 2: "As am I with mine!"
Guy 1: "Then to battle we shall go!"

Your question has provoked some stunning responses. Unquestioning, uncritical, unexamining minds are easily misled. Clever, persuasive people with a personal agenda can manipulate the unquestioning mind into believing that their personal agenda is what the holy texts mean without changing a word of the holy texts. Holy texts of all religions have been perverted in this manner throughout history. Sometimes the meanings have been so distorted for so long that it's impossible to discern what the originally intended meaning was since the context has changed so drastically. Unquestioning, uncritical, examining minds are deceived and misled to take actions to support and carry out the hidden agenda of those clever enough to manipulate them. The beginning of the solution is empowerment through proper education, that is teaching the skills of questioning, critical, and creative thinking. Such minds cannot be easily manipulated.

Because people think their holy workings are the literal words of their God(s). Because these books teach that you should smite those that disbelieve. Because somewhere along the line they've decided that blind faith is more valuable then measurable testing, and observation.
Why do you suppose Atheists oppose religion so severely?
As long as current religions survive there will ALWAYS be wars between them, or at least until we're all dead.

Well, that's a good sentiment, but as the children of poor third world are becoming indoctrinated to radical Islam we can only expect for the violence to continue.
This might seem a rather large tangent to what you are talking about but follow me on this:
Have you noticed that 'experts' say that rape is not a sexually centered act? Sure, sex is involved in it, but apparently according to the 'experts' the pathology is rather one of control, and power. The act is based on violence. So it is actually an act of agression, not based upon sex.
I believe that the Muslims that are in control of money and influence, who are also interested in more power, and influence, are interested in gaining even more power, money, and influence. They have so much money that it no longer is an issue of focus. Their source of gaining money is seemingly endless with the oil that they control. So the current Islamic problems that are constant are actually acts of agression in order to gain more power, not the spread of their religion per se.
So I think that Islam is just a front, a facade, to the real reason why we have so much going on in the Middle East, Africa, the southern Asian areas, and everywhere else where terroriam is being planned and executed.
What I am proposing is that like rape not being centered in sex, the current wars are not about religion, but about the attempt to give those in control of the wars more power. The agressor is atempting to control as much of the planet as possible. And you can note that wars are expensive, and that the attacks upon those who resist are constant, we then have a link to the richest of people who have something to gain from all the bloodshed.
I just thought I would throw that into the debate. Thanks.

Thats exactly what christanity and islam professes which is peace but then some people in those religions and others think they are the chosen people of God. Ego is never a good thing in religion. Religion is about your own salvation. People who kill in the name of religion have hate in there heart. I have read the Quran and it professes peace only but what can we say. Politics precedes religion in this world!

Nothing is more hypocritical than religion. It preaches about peace but in reality religions just divide people apart and cause wars and conflict. I think all religions should be erased from our minds and let the world start all over again.

it is all ignorance, the people killing in the name of religion actually don't know much about there religion be Christianity, which says love thy neighbor as thy sell, Islam peace on to you and so many other religion all is about peace. the issue is that the preachers are the cause of the problems, instead of preaching what is in the books, they try to manipulate the mine of the people, instigating religious crises, using ignorant illiterates to cause com fusion all over the world. it is unfortunate that it is only the poor people that killing are themselves, but the rich Muslim man is still a friend to a rich Christan man, what an irony.

The number of major gods recognized around the world and recorded in world history are in the hundreds.
The number of religions, current and past, centered on these gods, is in the thousands.
The number of lives lost in the attempts to advance or defend religious beliefs is in the millions.
The number of humans negatively affected by this cultural anomaly is in the billions.

Religion is just one false pride, like racism, and nationalism. That the Power Mad use to stir up the ignorant masses. And while the masses beat each other in the head. The Power Mad sit back and eat caviar, drink champagne, and make witty comments.

Most of the concious, good faith followers believe in the same thing. Murder is not something I'm down with. I believe in peace and rersepecting others. Faith is about harmony and doing good. But when you give crazy people the power, they seem to abuse the Hell out it! they use it for their own selfish need's. Chances are God ain't down with that either...
