s, p, d, and f orbitals are the orbitals in the electron configuration of an atom under the modern atomic theory. The s orbital is found in all shells and contains the first 2 electrons. The p orbital is found from the 2nd to 7th period and containds three suborbitals of 2 electrons each, making a total of 6 electrons. The d orbital has 5 suborbitals of 2 electrons each making a total of 10 electrons, and the f orbtial has 7 suborbitals of 2 electrons each making a total of 14 electrons. The d and f orbitals can only be filled after the s orbital of the higher shell has been filled because there cannot be more than 8 valence electrons at once. The transition elements are the elements where the d and f orbitals are being filled
