I'm photographing a wedding and the bride doesn't want everyone lined up for photos with the family. I agree they are stuffy but what are the pther options? I'm usually pretty good with coming up with new ideas but I'm stumped with this one!

Here is my experience with the natural "unposed" look.
The prints that sell in albums or wall hangers are the more traditional poses. The "far out" stuff is fun, but the parents don't like them much and there is the complaint that there's nothing to frame for the wall. So go ahead and let your creative juice flow, but make sure to get a few traditional formals to go along with the pj shots. (BTW, traditional does not have to mean stuffy and stilted lineups. You can pose people in a more relaxed manner than the ones standing at attention in your Mom's album)
Surf the wedding websites for some ideas, and look in the big wedding mags to see shots with a trendy feel.
Also, don't forget that moving locations and setting up unfamiliar poses are time consuming. Make sure the bride knows this and wants to budget the extra time.

I am a photographer and I did several shoots for a "trash the dress" idea. First make sure you know how much damage you are willing to deal with if you plan on keeping or donating the dress. Water and beach ideas are always great since its an easy clean up and amazing shots. Early morning and sunset make for a great backdrop. And I suggest a lot with the groom too!

I know of a photographer who refuses to take the standard lined up pictures.
Rather than explaining to you what they do, perhaps you can look at some of the work to get an idea.

I think people still need to get together in groups, but she doesn't line them up and position them. She just keeps snapping away and grabbing the moments as they happen. I hope this helps.

Try taking pics of the bride getting ready with her helpers all around her, then the same for the groom. or just any shot of the family interacting not posing.

Everyone can take turns putting the bride on their shoulders.
The bride can dance with each wedding party member -- whatever dance she associates with that person.

when the family is having fun in the pic is when they come out best....have everyone blowing bubbles....or doing the wave...i like the pics when the boys are holding up the bride straight across....you can have everyone cheers with drinks in their hand....a shot each of YMCA....just have fun...everyone laughing is key

Get them all to dress in period costumes and have "candid" shots taken of small groups.
