it all depends what stage of the heart worm in the dog.....at first you will see nothing, no symptoms at all. Only until the heart worm is in the last stages will you see your dog breathing heavier and tires him out to walk a short distance. Heart worms are exactly that a worm caused by a mosquito bite, that entertwines in the heart and starts to squeeze the heart muscle. Very deadly to the animal. You should have a blood test done on the dog and treat if necessary. If it is a negative result get him on heartworm prevention expecially if you live near water.

Advanced heart-worm disease can cause coughing, shortness of breath, and other symptoms associated with any cardio/pulmonary disorder. Sadly it's preventable.
The best thing is to take your dog to the vet and have him tested. Then he should be treated and/or put on a good prevention routine. Something you should discuss with your vet as well.
OK this can be costly. But it's also part of the costs of pet ownership.

Sometimes there are no symtems. Dogs can go months or years without symtoms with less active dogs. Mostly they are lack of energy, lots of caughing, if you pat the dog hard on the chest and it caughs. If you suspect heart worms go to your vet, a clinic or even petco & petmart with shot clinic offer heart worm tests at reduced prices. This should be done once a year.

Get your dog to the Vet if you even think it could have heartworms!!
The dog would need to be treated fast!! If your dog is going to stand any chance of living!!!! GO to the Vet today and have a blood teat run!!! TODAY!!!!!
Symptoms: coughing, rapid breathing, weight loss and death!!!!
If your dog does not test for heartworms then get the dog started on monthly medication!!
THERE IS NO REASON NOW DAYS FOR A DOG TO DIE FROM HEARTWORMS!!!!
I found a dog that had heartworms and she was treated and she did live. She was a stray running around. Getting treatment early is the only hope!!!

They might drag their but on the floor, if your dog does that call his vet IMIDIETLY, what we do with my dog, hes a greman shepperd, we give him a pill everymonth, its a clean out pill, to make sure if he has any worms in him, he'll poop them out. I think you can get this at your vets, and if not, she/ he will tell you where to buy them. Your dog will not be able to controll when and where he poops out the worms, because the pill makes him/ her poop out the worms, but remember, you will be happy that your dog doesn't have heart worm, and the worm are gonna b dead anyway becasue once they loose contact with its host, they die. Just remember that if he/she poopes them out inside your house, and you have to pooper scooper them.
