..gives you a task via email. How do you reply? Do you say? I will do it right away? Your task has been completed? He is at a different location and will be in later. I just want him to know its done without sounding goofy.

I also depends on the style of the boss. Some bosses are bottom liners and prefer the "done" response, especially if they are sending the email from their blackberry. If that's the case, I would send a "Yes" or "OK" response as soon as the request comes in, then a "done" when the task is done.

If the boss likes more input, though, those responses may sound short or curt to him or her. Then you might want to use better email etiquette and include the boss's name and a short sentence to acknowledge the request and a time frame for completion. When the task is completed, a short sentence or two to let them know it's done and any pertinent details about the task. One of the things I like to include when I finish a project or report if it's not a routine job, is a "thank you" for involving me in the project - it may sound corny, but you're showing that you're happy to help and capable of handling responsibility.

Even though we work in the same building, the president of my company usually makes requests via email. If I can do the task right away, and relatively quickly, I just reply with a email saying "done". But, if I can't get to it immediately, or if it will take a few hours to complete, I usually respond with a "working on it, will have it ready by 3 pm (or whatever time."
This just acknowledges I've seen his request, and advises him of the status of the task.

Do the same thing, that you would have done if he told you this in person. Examples :

1. I will get to it this afternoon.
2. Actually I am working on it right now.
3. I am waiting for that express delivery. It will be done as soon I get it.
4. Do you want this first or the other project that you told me yesterday first.
5. I will not go home, until I finish this tonight
6. By the way, where is that promotion ? (Just kidding !)

Simply reply with:
Thank you, I will get started on this right away, and I will follow up when the task is complete.

Do everything he asks you to, when all is completed sent him 1 email stating that all has been done. You should be 100% sure all is correct and completed. Good Luck.

I think you can tell him in your email.. Okay I will get right on it and when I am finished I will (if need be) send it to you or let you know when completed.
