First, ask your Dad about getting another dog - of any breed. If it's going to be his dog - he should have a the final sayso.
That said, and assuming you've all discussed the new dog
Why not another lab? They're a wonderful breed.
Or a Golden Retriever
Or a Doberman Pincher
Or a German Shepherd
And please don't rule out shelter/rescue dogs. Forget that old wives tale about puppies. I've had no fewer than 5 rescued dobermans, a rescued border collie and a rescued pit bull over the years. Each dog had a truly questionable, even horrific background and each one turned out to be an angel sent from heaven.
The nicest things about adopting an adult dog is they usually come spayed/neutered, pottie trained, even some obedience and they don't chew like puppies.

You should really ask your dad what kind of dog he would like if any. I think it should be a decision the both of you should make together. Both Labs and Golden Retrievers are wonderful dogs and easy to train.

I would not get your dad a dog.
I would let him pick one when he fells like getting another.
It takes time to get over the death of a dog.
I had to have two of my dogs put to sleep about 8 months apart.
It was one of the hardest things I ever had to do.
Give your dad time having this dog for 14 years that is not easy to handle!!
Sounds like your dad's dog had a very good life to have lived as long as the dog lived.
Let your dad pick a dog when and if he is ready for another dog.
When I lost my two dogs I said I would not want another dog.
Well my husband wanted a yellow lab. After about 1 year I now have a 3 month old yellow Lab laying on my floor asleep as I speak.
It just takes time!!
Good Luck!!
P.S. Sorry to hear about the dog!! It is always sad when we have to give up our dogs!!

If you are buying a dog for your dad... You should make sure that he really does want another dog.. And you should find out from him what he might like..
Here's what you do.. You get a card, and in there you put a coupon that says ' free dog ' and you talk to him to find out what you could get for him.. Maybe he would like to be involved in the picking out of a new puppy.. Maybe the dog in the litter that you would like, wouldn't necessarily be the dog that your dad would choose for himself.
Dogs as gifts only make good gifts if the person is aware of what's going on and agrees.

Hello Justin..so sorry about the loss..but I'm one who is glad euthanasia can be done for animals suffering, even tho it's still heartbreaking when done..14 is the life expectency for a Lab...and if he really likes this breed, I'd say it's a safe bet he would like another one..he lived long & good to be 14..ours is about there too...Take Care :)

I'm very sorry to hear you are losing your old guy - sounds like he had a good, long life. If your father is truly interested in another dog so soon, I would check with him to see what HE is interested in. Some people need to go through the grieving process, and cannot handle another dog too soon. He may just want to find another Labrador. They are wonderful dogs, and you could get him a black or a yellow so he doesn't associate him/her with the one he lost. Good luck. If you are interested, check out the following website to find your new friend.

That's something you should discuss with your dad.
We tried getting my in-laws a dog 3 months after thier Westie had to be put down at 16 yrs old, and it was a disaster. They wanted no part of the dog at all. We ended up keeping the dog ourselves and placing it with another family member later.

I'm really sorry for your loss. I lost my 11 month puppy yesterday. She was hit by a truck. The pain seems unbearable. It'll get better. She was a Coton de Tulear, and was very easy to train as long as she was kept in the house...
