There’s this guy at my college who hasn’t slept or eaten for about 4 days now
I asked him why he hasn’t slept and he says because he’s been working.

Later on in the day at lunch a class mate offered him some hot crispy scrumptious chips and he yelled “get that way from me, I haven’t eaten in 4 days”.

I looked at him and said “what you haven’t eaten or slept in 4 days and you drive to work, do you want to have an accident”
And he said “yer I feel so tired and hungry” (maybe he was delusional)

So I said “why you don’t eat” but says he doesn’t want too.

I then asked if he was a Muslim because they do that sort of thing
And but he says he’s not.
A different peer asked where he works and why so many hours but instead of answering the question he says he’s been working on his car

I was confused now either is making all this stuff up just so others will say
“What you haven’t eaten or slept in 4 Days….Well done here’s a medal “
I mean the guy is kind of chubby so unless he’s on some freaky weight loss plan then I don’t know why else he’s doing this to himself ,not like I care.. More chips to go around

But anyway my question is how long can a person go without food or sleep.

Thanks

You can only go a few days without water, the food you can go up to a month I think because your body will just start eating of the fat and then the muscle tissue. Sleep you will begin to loose your mind after two weeks. But I don't know when it will kill you. Now, what it sounds like to me is that your friend might have a drug problem, a pretty serious one. And that is why he is irritable, not sleeping, and staying up. There are drugs that can keep you up for as long as a week, and you won't eat during this time either because you loose your appettite. If he starts binge sleeping and then does this behavior repeatedly, then that is a sign of it to. If he is jittery or more aggressive and paranoid, that is also another sign. Also if he starts experiencing rapid weight loss and he quits caring about important things. It may not be that, but that is what it seems like to me.

If he is fat, then I'm guessing that he might be able to go a month or so without food (but that low blood sugar level might make him a little crazy, I think). Lack of sleep is a worse thing. I don't think that you will die from not having enough sleep (you will probably eventually pass out), but he might wreck his car and kill someone.

...In a study published [September 2000] in the British journal "Occupational and Environmental Medicine", researchers in Australia and New Zealand report that sleep deprivation can have some of the same hazardous effects as being drunk.

Getting less than 6 hours a night can affect coordination, reaction time and judgment, they said, posing "a very serious risk."

Drivers are especially vulnerable, the researchers warned. They found that people who drive after being awake for 17 to 19 hours performed worse than those with a blood alcohol level of .05 percent. That's the legal limit for drunk driving in most western European countries, though most U.S. states set their blood alcohol limits at .1 percent and a few at .08 percent.

The study said 16 to 60 percent of road accidents involve sleep deprivation. The researchers said countries with drunk driving laws should consider similar restrictions against sleep-deprived driving...

the magic three;
3 minutes without air
3 days without water
3 weeks without food.

no-one knows how long you can go without sleep, indefinately in theory, but this has not been proven. it is not known why we need sleep, but we all do; there are lots of scientists working on this subject and of course it cannot be good for you to go too long without sleep and can be dangerous i.e. driving.
