Well the Bible states that it would be better for the church to have the gift of prophecy so as to build up the church. However, you also have to be careful when people are prophesying that they are from God - that is why you probably would need to read in Isaiah 8 where it says to test them by the law and prophets (the Old and New Testament) to see if they are not prophesying against what the Bible teaches or already prophesied.

The gift of prophecy is as relevant today as it was before because it is best way to know if someone is saying that his message is from the true God or not. Deuteronomy 18:22 states: "When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him."

1 John 4:1-3 tells us how to discern if a spirit is from God or not.

Would you like to know some prophecies that a spirit revealed to us? You may find them in my website under Prophecies. They were revealed in 1979. That was 28 years ago. Now, you can test if the prophecies have happened or not. If they have happened, are they from God? If not, could you say that the spirit is not from God?

For someone to prophesy over you would be a rare occurance indeed. In Revelation John says that "the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophesy", so if you have a deep conviction in the life, atonement and divinity of Jesus you will be able to recieve prophesy. You gotta remember though, you can't recieve such inspiration for someone that you have no authority over. Everyone has authority over themselves, and parents have authority over their children, etc. Unless you are given specific authority from God, and that authority is made manifest to you throught the Holy Spirit, it is not realistic to assume that you could "prophesy" over someone, or thta a person not of authority could do so over you.

As for your question: it's a really personal one. That's why the other answerer says that no one can manifest the gift - not because they can't, but because he's never seen it done with authority.

It is absolutely relevant today. Those who think it's a very rare occurrence, or usually false, or even that it "died with the last Apostle", just haven't been in circles where it's fairly common.

I've been given prophecy which has helped me greatly. It's not usually direct prediction, although that has happened and been proven true, it's usually advice, direction, encouragement. But from God through the prophet, not from his/her mind. I can usually tell the difference.

The gift of prophecy is being able to correctly interpret prophetic scripture, it has nothing to do with fortune telling or whatever its called. Certain situations that come up in your life can give you a much deeper understanding of prophetic scripture.

The gifts of the spirit to include prophecy halted with the death of the last Apostle......... John.

"Love never fails. But whether there are [gifts of] prophesying, they will be done away with; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will be done away with. 9 For we have partial knowledge and we prophesy partially; 10 but when that which is complete arrives, that which is partial will be done away with" -1 Corinthians 13:8-10

"but when that which is complete arrives, that which is partial will be done away with" << This part is referring to the "complete" Bible.

The so-called "prophesying" going on now does NOT originate with God.

"For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into apostles of Christ. 14 And no wonder, for Satan himself keeps transforming himself into an angel of light. 15 It is therefore nothing great if his ministers also keep transforming themselves into ministers of righteousness." - 2 Corinthians 11:13-15

There was this old Gypsy woman at the carnival side show that read my palm. She prophesied that I would soon eat a corn dog. She was right. Amazing!

1 John 4:1: “Beloved ones, do not believe every inspired expression [“every spirit,” KJ, RS], but test the inspired expressions to see whether they originate with God.”
