I was raised as a Catholic, well sort of, my parents did it out of a feeling of obligation, but they didn´t really believe in God, so they didn´t convince me...the thing is, I quite envy religious people, because they seem happier (when smt bad happens the take comfort believing it was God´s will and they have got a community to fall back on and many friends) however I don´t think I´d be able to become religious, so tell me the bad things...no sex before marriage doens´t count, because I am married anyway...

Most of these answers are no good.

Never mind what other people think. You are following a path to God that only you are meant to follow. From the nature of the answers I've read so far, the paths these people have taken are not exactly leading where I think you want to go. Just look at them, so full of hatred for fellow human beings who have chosen to follow the One, Holy, Universal, and Apostolic Church.

Most of the sorts that have answered your question so far are not Catholic - and it certainly shows. Doesn't it?

Here's what you do. Pick up a copy of the Catechism of the Catholic Churhc. Soft covers are available for as little as $10.

Read this book and I guarantee you will learn more about Catholic beliefs and practices that you ever thought you could learn in a lifetime. The word 'catechism' means 'teaching' afterall. The Catechism also explains what the Church's position is on social topics and, more important - why they teachings are what they are.

You really should acquire a Catechism and read. From the teachings that the Catechism imparts, you will be able to discern for yourself the pros and cons of the Catholic Church. This is the best way to go.

In my search for the truth, I've become satisfied that the Bible is the absolute truth. However, I've also found that Catholicism is a serious hindrance to that truth. This is true of most organized religion, especially of the "high church" sort.
Forget religion, and focus on knowing God, having a relationship with him (Jn. 17:3), and finding out how you can know for sure that you have eternal life through Christ (Jn. 20:31; 1 Jn 5:13).
Get involved in a simple Bible-teaching, Bible-believing church that isn't hung up on ritualism or emotional radicalism. Find a group of people in a church that are simple, normal, down-to-earth people who happen to believe that the Bible is true. Then continue to explore and search for its truth together.
Forget becoming religious. That's not what God wants. It's not about lists of rules and "dos and don'ts" God simply wants to get to know you. Start there and just live your life knowing that the Bible is true and that you know God, and then keep reading, praying, and fellowshipping with other believers.
I promise you'll never make and uncomfortable or coerced life-change. On the contrary, you'll be a lot more comfortable with yourself and with the direction of your life.
Good luck!

Not only is the Catholic faith true and the founded on St.Peter but lived properly it is a thing of great beauty, look for the negative all the time and of course you will find it,it is not perfect like any other faith but it holds all the revealed truths and leaves nothing out like fundamental Protestantism does, this is why people cannot accept it as they should because it is not just about waving hands in the air and getting feelgood moments.

Disadvantages? I'm gonna sound weird, but there are none.

I'll try to explain.

Religion, Catholicism, is based on God. What is God?

God is pure beauty, love, peace, joy, truth and goodness. God... is... perfection. When He gives us graces, like faith, we get a taste of that perfection.

If religion is based on God, and God is all of those things above, then what disadvantages could there be?

Hope this little drop in the bucket helps. God bless and take care.

Entrapment.

In the case of Catholicism, good people are especially unaware just how indoctrinated they are into believing what they are told, in seeing the church as good and holy, in believing priests and the wealth of the church is there to help the poor.

So when good people travel or engage in work that puts them face to face with the "church" in the field, especially in times of war, of famine, of conflict they are often shocked to find the church taking a less than holy position.

Take Rwanda for example- a predominantely Catholic country. Today, there is almost a dozen former religious (including nuns and priests) who have been jailed for crimes against humanity in actively assisting in the murder of non-Catholics by the militia.

Why? These are not easy answers. Good people, especially Catholics have an extremely hard time coming to terms with the fact that for almost 2,000 years the Vatican has been the epicenter of Evil. See the Almanac of Evil for a brief summary of over 1800 crimes against humanity.

Religion differentiates us from being animals without religious controls man will become animal he will keep any woman as his mistress ,no control of sex life, nocontrol over eating, sleeping, mating & defending.

As a dog in the street has no control over eating ,sleeping, mating & defending so our situation is the same if we dont follow religion.
A dog in the street cannot ask this question "WHO AM I" but we have been given this intelligence to ask & make enquiries but if we dont ask that question then scriptures says we are like animals

Being "religious" means you waste a LOT of your life in some church or like place, you avoid certain enjoyable behaviors because you are threatened with some mythical hell. If you could only have all those hours and fun experiences back... but you can't, you wasted sooo much of your life playing make believe.

Catholicism is the truth with a bunch of made made lies on top designed to oppress and control. But if you skim off all those lies and end up with just Jesus, just the truth, ie Christianity, there are no disadvantages at all. A personal relationship with him is the most amazing thing you could ever have.

Don't envy them.

"The fact that a believer is happier than a skeptic is no more to the point than the fact that a drunken man is happier than a sober one"

Remember that.
