There are three types of tongues that I know of.

1. Tongues where the language is another countries language and another person of another country can hear it. One time a preacher was preaching about Jesus and then the Holy Spirit prompted him to speak in tongues. He did so and a women came weeping to the front. When he inquired what she wanted she said he had just said in Hebrew that Jesus was the Messiah and she need to come forward and accept him.

2 Tongues as a private language between the speaker and God.

This is a personal prayer language where only the Holy Spirit knows what is being said. This is very useful in intercessory prayer when you are praying for someone but you don't know what to pray for. The Holy Spirit prays though you. The foreign language tongues can be a persons private language tongues also.

3 Tongues as prophecy.

Tongues can be spoken out loud in prophecy and at this time there is most times a person that can interpret the tongues. I have been called on By God two times to interpret the tongues. It's like God uses two people to bring a prophecy to the church, the person who speaks the tongues and the person who interprets. The first time I went to a church that became my home for two years the head pastor spoke a prophecy in tongues and I had a lot of respect for him that he would do that in his own church.

Tongues can be used by the enemy, just as evil spirits can reside in Christians. We should not be afraid to embrace the Baptism of the Holy Spirit because we are scared of tongues. Jesus is a good God and he's in control of our life if we are submitted to him.

Can the ability to “speak in tongues” come from a source other than the true God?

1 John 4:1: “Beloved ones, do not believe every inspired expression [“every spirit,” KJ, RS], but test the inspired expressions to see whether they originate with God.” (See also Matthew 7:21-23; 2 Corinthians 11:14, 15.)

Among those ‘speaking in tongues’ today are Pentecostals and Baptists, also Roman Catholics, Episcopalians, Methodists, Lutherans, and Presbyterians. Jesus said that the holy spirit would ‘guide his disciples into all the truth.’ (John 16:13) Do the members of each of these religions believe that the others who also “speak in tongues” have been guided into “all the truth”? How could that be, since they are not all in agreement? What spirit is making it possible for them to “speak in tongues”?

A joint statement by the Fountain Trust and the Church of England Evangelical Council admitted: “We are also aware that a similar phenomenon can occur under occult/demonic influence.” (Gospel and Spirit, April 1977, published by the Fountain Trust and the Church of England Evangelical Council, p. 12) The book Religious Movements in Contemporary America (edited by Irving I. Zaretsky and Mark P. Leone, quoting L. P. Gerlach) reports that in Haiti ‘speaking in tongues’ is characteristic of both Pentecostal and Voodoo religions.—(Princeton, N.J.; 1974), p. 693; see also 2 Thessalonians 2:9, 10.

"Tongues" is a language, it just may not be a human language. In 1 Corinthians 13:1, it says it can be a "tongue of men or of angels". And in 1 Corinthinas 14:2 it states "For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for NO MAN understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries."

There are incidents of people "speaking in tongues" and it being recognized as a real language and understood. I witnessed such an incident a few years back were a young girl began to pray in Spanish (which she did not know) for her father (who had deserted the family about four years before that). She kept calling him to her and to the church so that he could be saved. After about a hour of her praying, he came walking in the door. He had been traveling through the state on business, and his car had died right in front of the church. He got saved yet that day, and the family was restored. Have the whole thing on tape.

But most of the time, the language is not understood. The main purpose of "tongues" is not as a tool for speaking to people, but as a form of prayer to God. He alone needs to understand it. So it is rarely recognized as a "human" language.

The first occurrence of speaking in tongues occurred on the Day of Pentecost in Acts 2:1-4. The apostles went out and shared the Gospel with the crowds, speaking to them in their own languages, “we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!" (Acts 2:11). The Greek word translated "tongues" literally means "languages." Therefore, the gift of tongues is speaking in a language a person does not know in order to minister to someone who does speak that language.

Speaking in tongues for the Christians at Pentecost 33CE was for speaking to people who had different languages so they could be understood.

Today, false religion can be identified by claiming members "speaking in tongues" that no one understands. On those rare occasions when someone did understand whatever language the translation was the most vulgar, obsene words they had ever heard. Certainly not from God.

It like chanting and praying in sounds. People usually speak it when they want to talk to God and pray. It's when the Holy Spirit come into you and opens your "Spirtual eyes". There are no too alike langauges, only communicates with God Himself. Some say they can talk different langauges and understand, but the language is mainly in God's tongue and for prayer. It's kinds like a dream, how God communicates to you.

One can only assume that people who are speaking in tongues are being punished by God, seeing as this was how he punished the people who made the Tower of Babel.

Well please do not consider that every one tongues talking mirrors what this video indicates. There are extremes in each and every denomination, adding the Charismatic / Pentecostal denominations. There are mellow tongue speakme Christians who do not roll at the flooring or think within the prosperity gospel. It seems like you are coming from the position that tongues is not for in these days. The scriptures do not help the thought that tongues and the opposite non secular items had been simplest transitority. It does not help the thought that when the Bible used to be canonized or the church used to be based there used to be not more want for the items. The Bible helps and teaches the reverse. Matter of truth, the church buildings who had been based spoke in tongues and prophesied. They now not simplest had the apostles with them, that they had their letters and heard on a consistent foundation the debts of the gospel, a few from firsthand witnesses. They had nearly simply up to we did, if now not extra and the Holy Spirit nonetheless deemed it imperative to deliver them the supernatural items. It says in one million Cor. thirteen:10 "while the excellent comes the partial will go away." Some erroneously proclaim the excellent has come. Yet the arena and lifestyles hasn't reached perfection. The church with all of it is Bibles and reports and lecturers and meetings nonetheless hasn't come virtually the extent of operation that the early church did. It isn't any wherein close adulthood. The partial might be performed away with while Jesus returns and establishes a excellent international. Until then the entire items aren't simplest wanted however utilized by people who find themselves pursuing them and open to the Spirit relocating in such methods. Those who do not rob themselves and others of a few uncommon matters the Holy Spirit does. Why tongues in these days? The equal motive as within the days of the apostles. one million). Evangelism. To talk to these of another language while no translator is to be had. two). To construct up ones internal guy. Paul mentioned in one million Cor. 14:four that after we pray within the Spirit or tongues we edify ourselves. I have skilled this countless occasions. I've had days wherein I used to be suffering and I started to wish in tongues for a at the same time and I observed this force coming forth from my spirit that used to be constructing me up. Afterwords I used to be bolstered and motivated. As for there being forged examples of this in latest western international of Greek-pondering folks who think guide abilities is the whole thing, here is one you may also uncover intriguing - John Bevere a Charismatic preacher shared a sworn statement approximately his assistant who prayed in tongues one night time at a church at the same time he used to be preaching. She felt pressured to wish in tongues and did so for no less than an hour. Afterward a man in entrance of her grew to become round and requested her wherein she found out that ancient German language. She advised him that she did not realize any German. And he then expert her that he used to be a professor at a neighborhood college who knew that ancient German tongue she were talking and that it used to be hardly ever spoken or taught in modern day days however he overheard her talking it for the period of the provider. He mentioned she might say matters like "Turn to your Bible to ________" after which John might repeat phrase for phrase precisely what she mentioned. He mentioned this went on for the entire time. I've been doing some reading on this because I don't get it either. Apparently, it can either be a real, recognizable language that the speaker does not know, or it can be a "God language" or "prayer language" that is not a recognizable language.
