One sees this all the time a question by an atheist is answered with Biblical quotes. Or when someone asks a question about some mystical belief say magic than we also see a lot of Biblical quotes to show how wrong it is. I don't understand this if a person does not believe in the Bible or accept it as authoritative what is the use of using passages from the Bible.

"I don't believe in the Bible."

"Oh but says right here in the Bible that you should believe it!?"

Sorry Happy but when I have a discussion with a Christian I may use Bible quotes since this is what they believe I do not have to believe it myself. It is like communicating on their level (not meant offensively) since the Bible is their cornerstone of belief. I may use it to for instance show them what I may see as a fallacy. But using Bible passages to convince me of its truth would be ineffective on the other hand.

Bible quotes are indeed useless to those who do not believe that the bible is in any way the word of God.

I guess they think if we read it often enough we will begin to believe it's the truth. They don't seem to understand that the quotes are meaningless to those who aren't of their faith.

Isn't using the Bible to prove the Bible a bit like using Mein
Kampf to prove the benefits of National Socialism?

Alot of believers think that the Bible is an instruction book, I however find it to be nothing more than a history lesson passed down through generations of humans. They do that because they think that the bible has answers for everything. I happen to believe that's what our conscience is for. Oh and in reference to an earlier answer, "GOD" didn't write the bible, lol humans did ;)

You are dealing with people who believe we all need to believe as they do.And anyone who will not jump on their bandwagon are "wrong " So they need to get out their book to show you how wrong you are and prove how right they are .It really ends up being about them .Many are so brain washed they don't get it.Plus realize they believe that by harassing you with their book they will get extra Browne points from god.
I like the ones who tell me "you are going to hell" .When I say ok, it bugs them more because they need to be right and wish to make me upset ,they will keep it up. Says allot about where they are coming from. Its all about them they need to be right

This is the work of those who are religious and not spiritual there is a difference but that hasn't hit home with most of them yet

Think about it. If you believe in something you would stand for it and use it in your daily life.

Christians believe and live by the bible so that's the way we speak.

Good question.

A classic example is the whole creation vs evolution debate.

There is a heap of factual evidence to suggest that the large number of genetic mutations of human beings mean we could not have simply evolved on our own.

But Bible quotes just don't come close to the same impact.

So it has to be something else.

I suspect the answer to the enigma is simple home grown laziness. Christian fanatics are cutting and pasting quotes to support their arguments because they can't be bothered researching the many decent arguments out there that could support a more educated and powerful response.

When in doubt cut and paste the Bible...

Very true.

I try to reason on prophecies that have come true that are both in the Bible and proven through historical documents.

Once they see that it was history written in advance then, maybe they can start to put faith in what it says.

Some will reason and most will not. I suppose I was more reasonable, huh?

And EVERYONE should remember:

"But the wisdom from above is first of all chaste, then peaceable, reasonable, ready to obey, full of mercy and good fruits, not making partial distinctions, not hypocritical. 18 Moreover, the fruit of righteousness has its seed sown under peaceful conditions for those who are making peace."

I think the people who do it mainly do it to try and convince themselves. They are frightened that if they even dare have a mind of their own, they will be lead down the wrong path.

Most intelligent Christians do not quote the bible without making their own arguments and opinions made clear as well.

Maybe you can answer this question for me, why do 'some' non-believers quote the bible to try to prove points to Christian?

so if you don't believe in it, why would such answers bother you? you would just normally over look them no different than over looking a bug smashed on your windshield.

but, since it does bother you, and it seems to dig into you some, maybe that should tell you something. that somewhere inside, you do wonder about it, specially since so many do follow it.

bible tells its followers to quote the scriptures, for that is why they are there and why they are broken down into so many numbers.
