After chicken pox, the Varicella Zoster virus goes dornant in our body. For reasons not entiely understood, in some persons the virus reactivates along a single nerve root to produce the characteristic rash of shingles. I have never seen it on both sides of the body. The skin over the shoulder blade is innervated by the spinal nerves termed T-2 to T-5. One can determine which root is involved more specifically if you pinpoint where the rash is in front, but it is mainly for acedemic purposes and has little bearing on outcome in your case.
Itching is most intense near the lesions, but varys widely in some persons. The duration of symptoms varies from person to person. It is generally shorter in younger individuals, but can be painful and prolonged in the aged.

I think the area is normally fairly limited. My wife has it now, on the left shoulder blade.
See your doctor, keep the area covered but don't put antiseptic creams on it.
Best not to let anyone touch the area; if they haven't had chicken pox they could be infected with it from touching the infected area.
