The empirical evidence says that the world is much older than 6000 years. I do not remember the Bible saying anything about the world being made 6000 years ago. However, I do know that according to the Bible, the sun was created on the fourth day. If a literal day is marked by the rising and setting of the sun, how could the first three days be literal days? Something isn't adding up...

Probably because it is not true or Scriptural.
There is no place in the Bible where the age of the earth is given as 6,000 years. This idea came not from the Word of God but from one Archbishop Ussher who figured average and given ages against Bible genealogies to arrive at that figure.
There are many problems with this method, not only in estimating ages, but filling in time gaps. Two of the most critical are the actual time involved in and between the two creations, recorded in Genesis, and time in the Garden (as Adam and the woman would not have aged until the fall).
This is a meaningless argument for both Christians and atheists; worse for Christians for they are putting Ussher's words in God's mouth.
I am also sure you know that many Christians do not consider the six days as literal; but get a day to be 1,000 years by taking Scripture and misapplying it.
Christians, and most intelligent design people, should realize that many arguments fall between the versus or stem from some theologians idea of what he thinks God is saying: (between the cracks as they would say today). You can put billions of years between Gen. l:1 and Gen. 1:2. Think about it.
All these arguments distract from the fact that God has started another creation; running parallel in time. The fact is that science and intelligent design are working on a creation that has been discarded. Perhaps that is the way it must be.

There's no such thing as "God's word".
Some people a couple of thousand years ago said that the world is 6000 years old and was made in 6 literal days. We now know that to be false. Scientists deny it because, of course, it is simply false.
It's really very simple, if you're willing to accept the truth.

Actually the Human Family is about 6,000 years old.
However, the "Days" referred to in the Bible concerning the creative period are different.
. “God brought about a division between the light and the darkness. And God began calling the light Day, but the darkness he called Night.” (Ge 1:4, 5) Here the word “Day” refers to the daylight hours in contrast with the nighttime. However, the record thereafter goes on to use the word “day” to refer to other units of time of varying length. In both the Hebrew and the Greek Scriptures, the word “day” (Heb., yohm; Gr., he·me′ra) is used in a literal and in a figurative or even symbolic sense.
The planet’s coming into existence is recounted in the Bible with the simple statement: “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.” (Ge 1:1) Just how long ago the starry heavens and the earth were created is not stated in the Bible. Therefore, there is no basis for Bible scholars to take issue with scientific calculations of the age of the planet. Scientists estimate the age of some rocks as being three and a half billion years, and the earth itself as being about four to four and a half billion or more years.
As to time, the Scriptures are more definite about the six creative days of the Genesis account. These days have to do, not with the creation of earth’s matter or material, but with the arranging and preparing of it for man’s habitation.
The Bible does not reveal whether God created life on any of the other planets in the universe. However, astronomers today have not found proof that life exists on any of these planets and, in fact, know of no planet besides the earth that is at present capable of supporting the life of fleshly creatures.

Was all physical creation accomplished in just six days sometime within the past 6,000 to 10,000 years?
The facts disagree with such a conclusion: (1) Light from the Andromeda nebula can be seen on a clear night in the northern hemisphere. It takes about 2,000,000 years for that light to reach the earth, indicating that the universe must be at least millions of years old. (2) End products of radioactive decay in rocks in the earth testify that some rock formations have been undisturbed for billions of years.
Genesis 1:3-31 is not discussing the original creation of matter or of the heavenly bodies. It describes the preparation of the already existing earth for human habitation. This included creation of the basic kinds of vegetation, marine life, flying creatures, land animals, and the first human pair. All of this is said to have been done within a period of six “days.” However, the Hebrew word translated “day” has a variety of meanings, including ‘a long time; the time covering an extraordinary event.’ (Old Testament Word Studies, Grand Rapids, Mich.; 1978, W. Wilson, p. 109) The term used allows for the thought that each “day” could have been thousands of years in length.

So what you are saying is that God put all this evidence that the world is billions of years old just to mess with our minds? Do you have any idea at all how many times the bible has been copied and translated? By people, not by God. Remember the concept of "free will" that God gave us? That would include the free will to make mistakes while writing and to change things that maybe someone didn't agree with when he was doing the copying? Let's say some ancient historian was copying down how long it took to create the world. The concept of it taking billions of years would probably be beyond his ability to comprehend, soooooo, voila it only took six days. God gave us brains, I'm sure he's very disappointed when we don't actually use them and just believe whatever we're told instead of actually thinking about it.

The Bible does not say that. It indicates man has been on earth about 6,000 years.
The planet was part of other creative days which are a much longer amount of time. Plus there is absolutely no idea of how much time BETWEEN the creative days.
What you are talking about is 2 Peter 3: 8 where one day with Jehovah is a thousand years. Here he was showing God's time is not our time. For someone like God, time is irrelevant. We should not be thinking our short ideas of time . The next verse shows He is not slow but is patient with people. Giving all people time to choose life.

You've got to be kidding me, I'm sure you're doing this just to create a stir, I'm sure not even the most ignorant of young earth fundamentalists could possibly call scientists ignorant.
You really need to learn more about objective and subjective truths.
And scientists deny this for the same reasons they deny fire breathing dragons, ghosts, magic spells and tooth fairies.

The world was created 6000 years ago?
Funny coincidence, as that's around the same time Sumerians invented glue.
This is the same as insisting that the distance between New York City and San Francisco is approximately 28 feet.
It seems that the so-called "truth" is nothing short of absurd.

The Bible does not say six literal 24 hour periods.
Six days are Six eons of time stages of creation events that would span millions of years each.
Though some in Christendom do say it was six literal days but the most people accept that the days are just describing the six stages of creation that built the universe, the earth and life up on it.
To the poster below me, yes we know that the Bible was written by men. That is why we have the books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John etc. But they were writings were inspired by God.
Moses wrote the book of Genesis in the wilderness. God inspired his writings.
