Its a myth. Although folklore would have it that about 90% of the human brain is dormant, this has proven scientifically unfounded. The fact that ~10% of neurons in the brain fire at any one time is a possible source of this misconception. If a large percentage of the neurons were to fire at the same time, the result would be a grand mal seizure!

a myth, not so cleverly worded. There is a BIG difference in thinking capacity and the brain. If you say man uses a few percent of his brain, technically correct, but much of the brain is used for automatic responses such as breathing, heart pumping, etc. That is very misleading as it would seem to suggest that it is possible to NOT use the brain for these functions, instead, using them for "thinking"If we did use those parts for thinking,we would probably have enough time to "think" "darn,I really needed those lungs and that heart to work"

Ya know, I went to the snopes.com site to look at this article the first answerer provided, and I've never been so dissatisfied with a snopes article as this one.

While the author spent a lot of time calling it a myth, he didn't exactly provide scientific evidence that we in fact do use all of our brains. All he said was that in the course of the day, we use just about all of our brains.

I dunno, it just didn't sound snope-ish ... they usually are so factual, this one sounded more like opinion. Maybe I just need another cup of coffee lol.

As this question is listed under the heading Religious and Spirituality section. I would have thought that the rest of the brain is awaiting to be fed more apples.

Yes I have thought about it. Can you Imagine the way this world would be THEN compared with the way it is NOW with the limited use we use now. It would be far far worse for sure. People already have TRIED to put them self ABOVE GOD as it is. Man is a wretched soul and it is only going to get worse. Man's Soul and his ways are as Black as Midnight anymore.

You have that one very wrong. The brain is not set in little tiny separate units.

Get out of the dark ages.

I heard that the average person uses 10%. But a person using more might be prescient, ESP, Ghostbusters or other people who deal with the paranormal.

It was that DJ who utilized less than 1% of his thinking capacity but for us we used and utilized all our sources and percentage of our thinking.
