Hi, I was diagnosed with Tinnitus and Hyperacusis at the age of 21, intially I panicked and got very depressed and thought I would never cope but a few years have gone by and hey, I have, I went to see a hearing therapist who taught me distraction techniques, I purchased a sound globe from Argos which helpes me to get to sleep,it displays calming colours on the ceiling and soothing sounds to help drift you to sleep, music also helps me alot(an MP3 player playing soothing sounds can be very helpful) and a good old film is very good at distracting me, some days are worse than others, especially if you are feeling run down, now I only get about one really bad day a month, I didn't get Tinnintus due to listening to loud music, instead they found out in the Hearing tests, its because my hearing is too good and thus senstive to everyday sounds which don't bother most people, e.g a loud hoover or high pitched sounds, I can hear the sounds in my head that people with average good hearing don't notice, there is no cure, and I found it frustrating that I had the condition when i'd been so careful with my hearing and never listened to blasting music, but once you accept that its not life threatening and that you can live along side it, (your brain will begin to get used to the sounds, will get bored with them and will hardly pay attention to them in the end), you will eventually forget about it as more important, interesting tasks arise which distract you from the noises, whenever I go in a very loud venue, e.g night club, I must wear clear/transparent ear plugs to protect my ears and prevent the noises from possibly getting worse, once in a quieter place they need to be taken out, otherwise the noises seem even louder, sometimes I do get upset as I now can't even remember what it was like before, when the sounds were never there, it seems a distant dream, but your husband will cope and if you can help distract him, if he has hobbies etc, its much easier, than it is for an elderly person, near the end of their life, who prehaps can't get out much and thus notices the sounds more, I have discovered I sleep better in the daytime now than in the evening, the everyday sounds outside help me to get to sleep, at night time where I live, it is soooo quiet, damn, I have two different sounds one in the right ear sounds like static, the sound in the left sounds more like running water, its hard when the people around me don't have it and I don't expect them to really sympathise as they simply can't SEE what the condition is, but I don't resent that, the nomality, them treating me just as before, helps me, whenever I talk about it, it actually makes it worse cos then i'm focused on it once again, if he hasn't already it may be worth him seeing a sound therapist, his doctor can arrange this for him and the therapist may recommend a sound generator, looks like a hearing aid, which omits a similar sound to the one he hears, and helps you adapt, so that the sounds don't bother you, it will be better explained by the therapist, anyway hope thats helped alittle, he will be okay, good luck!!!!

Hi. I've had tinnitus for years and then discovered, when being treated for a balance problem, that a drug called Betaserc reduces the sound a great deal. It's still there at times but nowhere near as loud as it was. Also, I find that someting that makes me conentrate, say a tough sudoku puzzle or something, distracts me from the noise. Hope this helps.

Hi , I suffer with this condition and have been told that there is no cure, however I have found things that can help. The first thing is to find somewhere that does the hoki ear candles treatment, once you have this done you can buy them yourself, the first time I had this done I experienced silence for 2 days !! but have now found that it sometimes works for just a few hours.
The other thing I found helpful was to get a radio alarm with an earpiece so that i can plug that in when I go to bed and know that it will turn itself off. This works by masking the sound that somehow seems to be louder when I am in a quiet room.
The main thing I would say to you is to be understanding when your partner cant hear as I find it frustrating when I cant hear and people think I am ignoring them or being rude, I am not its just that they are not speaking clearly enough for me to hear properly. At this point I would say that my wife is good at spotting these situations and will explain to the people concerned, as at times with me the sound I hear is like having someone whistling in my ear.
Hope this helps and its good to know that others have similar problems.

Yes, dear, - I DO have tinnitus, so, I know, exactly, how your partner feels! Some people claim, that it's just "SO EASY" to IGNORE, - which, absolutely, INFURIATES me! NOBODY understands, unless they SUFFER it, themselves! These people just say:- "IGNORE IT, - AND IT WILL GO AWAY!", - I've TRIED IT, - and it DOESN'T WORK!
The TRUTH is, that, with the best will, in the World, - you can NOT ignore something, which, - although NOBODY can HEAR it, apart from the poor devil WITH the condition, - sounds a BIT, like a tuneless Philharmonic orchestra, bashing their way, through the 1812 Overture, - and failing, - MISERABLY!
Another thing, that non-sufferers seem to believe, is that it STOPS, when you go to sleep, - I can TELL you, that this is TOTALLY WRONG, - it DOESN'T! In MY case, "BEDTIME" is the WORST, because the "NOISES", actually, appear to get LOUDER, in the "QUIET" of the night, - so, tinnitus sufferers, are ALSO, INSOMNIACS! The ONLY advice, - such as it IS, - that I can GIVE, is to try to "MASK" it, by using a "WALKMAN", and HEADPHONES, to play a more PLEASANT sound, - like his favourite MUSIC, - DIRECTLY into his ears! This works, for me!
Please, feel free, to E-mail me, - via the link, on this site, - and, I will be ONLY TOO PLEASED, to HELP, in whatever way, I can!

there is no therapy for Tinnitus. i will think of the consistent ringing in ones ears and the style you need to adjust your existence to residing with Tinnitus. I lost the listening to in my precise ear 5 years in the past from a tumor turning out to be in my inner ear for perhaps twenty years. there may be some alleviation, no therapy,to your Tinnitus. An Audiologist recommended me that there is a therapy or gadget that makes use of microwave ability to cut back or muffle the ringing on your ears. i do no longer yet comprehend how this new technologies works, so hit upon Audiologists online the place you reside and inquire. sturdy success. Hypnosis has good results in relieving the stress of living with tinnitus and even reducing its intensity.
Look for a certified hypnotherapist (someone who is also a psychologist or MD with a Hypnotherapy certification)

I have tinnitus, and it is really debillitating. There is no getting away from it, as it is permanantly in your head. The only thing that I have found that helps is acupuncture, and that is only limited.
