I have a 16 month old newfoundland female. I've noticed the past couple of days when I've brushed her, her spine feels really boney. Today I bathed her and she looks so skinny . I am taking a sample to the vet to be tested for parasites, but I was wondering if it may be from losing her winter coat sice I've brushed about a trash bag of fur off of her this week.

I took her to the vet today. No worms, but she's lost 10 lbs in 10 weeks. Blood work scheduled for next week.

Newfs are reasonably large dogs, at 16 months old, she is still growing a bit so may just have had a bit of a growth spurt, and some breeds of dog, particularly long haired dogs will lose a little weight as their coats either shed or thicken depending on weather. Check with the vet anyway, just to make sure she is healthy. One of my dobes weight yoyos badly but this is due to a medical condition, when you bath her, if you can visibly see more than 2 ribs standing out at the back of her rib cage, she is under weight and needs to see a vet. If its not that bad, she may just look really skinny to you because you are used to seeing a plump, healthy weight. If she is eating and drinking the same as normal, not more or less, she is fine.

It is not the spine that indicates if a dog is over weight or losing weight. It is the ribs. Are the ribs prominently visible? Coat is not an indication of a dog being the correct weigh. Dog breeds with double coats will blow (lose the majority of the long or guard hairs) in the spring or early summer. This is normal. All that you describe sounds normal. If you have doubts then have your dog evaluated by your vet.
