About 3,670 women will die from cervical cancer in the United States during 2007. (American Cancer Society)
A specific cause for cervical cancer has been discovered: the human papillomavirus (HPV). In most cases, HPV infections are not "active" long enough to cause problems. However, if an infection with a "high-risk" type of HPV persists, abnormal cells may develop - and turn into cervical cancer if not detected and treated early. www.thehpvtest.com

Yes, a person can die from cervical cancer, but usually it is after numbers of years where it could have been stopped in time.
When I was in my mid to late twenties I let my paps go for about 6 years or longer. When I got around to it, it turned out that I had pre-cancer level 4 considered level 0 cancer by some. It had even gotten into the birth canal.
One leep procedure w/some cauterization and even after about 13 years later, it never came back. Not everyone is so lucky to not have recurrence, but I think that many are.

Yes, cancer is not a good thing, but it's also very curable in early stages which is why you get regular check ups for detection.

I think so. But a pap smear will usually catch the cancer early enough to cure it.
